It had been a while if ever since I had experienced a Metro gig with as many people crowded into the room, and even longer since I had felt the anticipation that surrounded us as we waited, gazing intently at the stage for one of the worlds premier scene bands at the moment, *Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
*
I honestly didn’t know what to expect, their well documented drug use and infighting led me hope that they could keep it together to perform for the waiting fans.
The crowd was certainly an interesting one, the sleazy sounding, southern rock that makes BRMC so good was exemplified by the crowds tight jeans, tighter shirts or flannels, and undersized leather jackets. Most were giving the barstaff quite a workout.
Coming onstage to excited applause they opened up proceedings with ‘Berlin’ and kept the tempo at a subdued yet foot stompable level throughout. It wasn’t until half way through the gig that more than a sentence was uttered to the crowd which left me with the impression of the whole gig being too business like and not personable enough for me to let my guard down to enjoy it.
The songs were impeccably played, utilizing effects pedals, taking turns on different instruments, or sitting on the ground or up on a speaker stack depending on mood. Highlights included two Dylan covers, and crowd favourites ‘Aint no easy way’ and ‘Visions of Johanna’ all stirring an enraptured audience with their beauty, but without that personal touch it felt staged and plastic. I left with the impression that the boys went offstage, got their cheque and were out the door of the venue of which held 1000 of their dearest fans, without even looking back.
And the thought of that nearly spoilt the beauty of their sound for me.
