This Saturday gave the ever-growing cult of diehard Purple Sneakers kids another dose of their usual Friday antics to celebrate the launch of Head Sneaker PhDJ’s ‘Mixtape of Indie Joy’ launch.

The mixtape is a forty minute mashup of happening local artists, featuring Yves Klein Blue, Rivo Crew, Gotye, The Paper Scissors, I Heart Hiroshima, Dappled Cities – Vision Bell, Teenager, Wons Phreely, Urthboy, Soft Tigers, Melanie Horsnell, British India, Muscles, The Beautiful Girls, The Mares, Bluejuice, Regurgitator, Mercy Arms, Horsell Common and Cut Off Your Hands.

PhDJ (otherwise known as Boundary Sounds founder Martin Novousel) describes the Purple Sneakers sound, which is sampled in his latest compilation, as ” non-typical yet mega fun dance music… the sort of music we play is song-focused and is based on a combination of melody, groove and lyrics, rather than being based solely on a big fat beat.”

There to help the festivities on Saturday night were mixtape feature artists Wons Phreely and Bluejuice, as well as DJs Kato, Spruce Lee, Mailer Daemon and resident Purple Sneakers DJs K-Von and DJ Fle.

The night started up with easygoing indie beats, providing the perfect listening backdrop to a group of kids who were at first (understandably) more interested in election results coming up on television than just simply dancing.

Before long however, the results were in, celebratory drinks were had, and a happy crowd gathered campfire-style around the outdoor stage for the warm, soothing tunes of the lovely Wons Phreely. Wons was definitely catering to the atmosphere of the night, dedicating a song to ‘the idea of thinking you can run a country for over eleven years’ with the humorously titled ‘Asshole’.

A few more rounds and some funky dance beats later and it was time for the second helping of live music, this time with high-energy hip-hop/rock/pop/all round crazy men Bluejuice.

From the first few notes of their set, these boys had the crowd creeping closer and closer to the stage before the line between band and punter was invisible, one big orgy of dancing, singing and general silliness. The boys manage to have an amazing energy about them, with bassist Jamie Cibej and Jerry Craib on keys putting out such a full sound that it was actually a couple of songs in before this listener realised they didn’t have a single guitar in the band.

Drummer Ned Molesworth manages to keep the beats tight despite the antics of his fellow band members, including having a shirt thrown on his head mid song by one half of the frontmen team, Jake Stone. He and fellow maniac Stav Yiannoukas have a remarkable presence on stage, throwing themselves about over the venue, the punters and each other, while still managing to belt out more than sufficient vocals.

Of course the highlight of the set came as the boys played the oft-heard Purple Sneakers anthem – œVitriol’, with every visible member of the crowd dancing and singing as enthusiastically as the guys on stage.

Upon the lamented departure of the band, a mass of panting, sweaty kids then proceeded to head back to inside to dance the rest of the night away to their favorite indie tunes, drink cheap jugs of beer and have a bit of a pash on the couches. As you do at the Abercrombie.
