Welcome to podcast session number 14. This week’s podcast is all about one of our fave indie labels – The Ivy League. This month the crew at Ivy League are celebrating ten years at the frontline of indie rock – over the past decade they’ve signed some of this country’s best indie outfits and we’ve got our paws on a bunch of tracks from the labels stablemates like Red Riders, Youth Group, The Mess Hall, The Silents and the Ivy League’s very own supergroup – 1st Ivy Regiment Band. Also in keeping with the Ivy league theme, this week’s feature artist is Josh Pyke – who drops by to tell us all about the upcoming tour and his recent ARIA gongs.
Feature Artist
Josh Pyke (Ivy League)
2007 is proving to be quite the year for Josh Pyke – his new album Memories and Dust has already reached Gold record status. And he’s already got himself one of those pointy statues – having scooped up an ARIA alongside his pal Wayne Connelly for Best Producer for the Memories and Dust album. The recording also got the nod for Best Engineer and Pyke’s up for a further 3 nominations at the ARIA Awards next week. But he’s not resting on his laurels – no siree – Josh has just kicked off his Monkey With a Drum national tour and is ready to wow punters with his live act.
Emerging Artist
The Silents (Ivy League)
This week’s emerging artist is WA outfit The Silents – we love this Ivy League band so much we’ve hooked them up to play our first ever Perth FasterLouder Live gig. If you haven’t heard of The Silents yet, believe me – you will… in the meantime wrap your ears around the best little band to come outta the west – The Silents – with the track 23…
Ist Ivy Regiment Band (Ivy League)
CEC: Meet Ivy League’s supergroup – The First Ivy Regiment Band. This outfit features the combined might of Josh Pyke, Youth Group’s Toby and Patrick, Ben Nash from 78 Saab), big boy Hamish from (The Vines) on drums , little Adrian from Red Riders jamming on guitar and young Josh Bitmead from Neon. The band was formed to record a special track for Ivy League’s shiny new compilation album called Ten Years In The Trenches’. Wrap your ears around the track – Out of my Hands.
Red Riders (Ivy League)
Having just wrapped up a monster six week tour around the country to celebrate the final single from their album Replica Replica Red Riders have proved to be more adept than ever at producing songs with great hooks – none more so than their current single – Slide in next to Me. Check it out…
Youth Group (Ivy League)
Since releasing their first album way back in 2000, Youth Group have become a fave in the local music scene. But it wasn’t til 2004 when the band served up their breakthrough album Skeleton Jar that they moved on to a whole new level of public consciousness – and big props for this transition would have to go out to teen drama The OC – who featured the band’s single Shadowland in an episode. One TV show = instant fame. But that’s not the end of the story – the real YG as a household name began when then the OC’s producers asked the band to serve up their take of the classic track Forever Young – suddenly the mainstream media embraced the band with the single reaching #1 and making platinum sales in its first week. But here’s the track that started it all – Shadowland…
