MEDIA RELEASE
The Red Eyes have firmly established their position as one of Australia’s leading original Dub/Reggae acts. They have received critical acclaim for ‘Red Army’ (2010), including a nomination for ‘Best Blues & Roots Album’ at the 2010 Australian Independent Record Label Awards and ‘Album of the Week’ on PBS FM and Radio Australia.
2011 has seen them tour nationally with Mary J Blige, Jimmy Cliff, and Maxi Priest during the Australia wide Raggamuffin Festival, and more recently joining an over 100 strong lineup of acts from all over the world, including Bob Dylan, Grace Jones, BB King and Ben Harper at Byron Bay Bluesfest. Later in the year they will tour internationally to Fest’Napuan, Vanuatu and then sweep through the pacific islands, landing finally in New Zealand for their first ever NZ tour.
Founded in 2002, The Red Eyes brings together 7 multi-instrumentalist musicians who deliver an explosive live sound that combines masterful beats and shake the house dub rhythms with heartfelt lyrics that provide unique antipodean spin on the broad Reggae genre. The band is led on stage by enigmatic front man El Witeri (2011 APRA Songwriter Award Finalist) who draws on his New Zealand upbringing and Maori heritage for inspiration. Witeri introduces and closes each show in Maori to represent himself and welcome people into the whanau (family), creating a sense of community and openness that fans and new audiences are drawn to.
The Red Eyes are now preparing to record their 3rd studio album (out Feb 4 through MGM). In contrast to the recent ‘Red Army’, with its highly charged “live” sound, this album will offer audiences an insight into the more introspective side of the band, showcasing tracks including those born from improvised jam sessions & accoustic playing, as well as explorations into the darkly rich world of dub. It will yet again see The Red Eyes delivered a layered, intricately produced album, incorporating live studio takes and calling on a line up of guests and Red Eyes past, present & future.
