Playing music is something so viciously intimate that you just can't stop struggling until you're happy with what you're doing," says Dave Butler, lead singer and guitarist from Brisbane four-piece the quills.
For the casual observer, though, the quills would seem to be anything but struggling. In late 2007 they played the Woodford Folk Festival, supported numerous ARIA award winning artists and released their debut EP ‘Some New Place’ which debuted at no. 1 on the 4ZzZfm top 20. But for the four members of this alternative rock outfit, Dave Butler, John Pickering, Andrew Stone and Fergus Scott, their time together has been a constant battle to get on top of their own music.
"I think the most important step for any band is finding the sound you're happy to call your own," says Dave. "For us, everything we've done so far has been about that search. And in 2008 we think we might have found something."
That 'something' is a harmonious collision of four musicians as equally endowed as they are diverse. Powerful, modern synths combine with new-age blues guitar; jazz-inspired bass lines embellish distinctive and unusual beats. All of this is restrained behind lyrical vocals and well-crafted pop songs. It's a sound that is instantly gratifying and yet which unfolds layer after layer for those willing to explore it. It’s dark at times but sincere, vulnerable but passionate. Most striking of all is the space that's created by the instruments; there's no clutter despite everything going on. What's obvious is that each member of the band is acutely aware of the others, each part deliberate and instinctual at the same time.
There is no doubt this band enjoys what they do. Their love of music is evident right through to their name, ‘the quills’. “Nothing is more exhilarating or rewarding than creating a song from nothing,†says Dave. “To start with all you need is a thought in your head and something to write it down with. We needed a name to capture that idea.â€Â
It’s an exciting time for the young band. With a string of successful shows already behind them this year, public awareness of the quills is growing rapidly through word of mouth about their powerful performances. With plans to take their music further afield, 2008 is poised to be a definitive year for the Brisbane outfit.
