The Maidens.
We're two Brisbane sisters who started an act that combines our love of the 80's, spoken word poetry and songs that take you to another place.
It's a gas!
We love the 80's. There are ground breakers and dynamites like Cyndi Lauper, Laurie Anderson, Nina Hagen, Prince... we could go on but it would take at least a decade. Scan through your cassette collection and remember that the 80's were about inventing and experimenting. And having fun.
Our shows are non-stop. We dance like the future is now. We play the Rubiks Cube. We wear safety goggles. There is sometimes paint, and generally somebody gets covered in water.
We have made an album, produced by Ant Aggs (from Afro Dizzi Act) and mixed by Magoo the Almighty. We made it before we went overseas last year and released it first on Dolby Cassette - yes, you read right!
And we've been in the 4ZzZ Album Charts for 8 weeks now and counting - this week, we're #2!
Rad.
We went over to the UK and Cyprus and played festivals and gigs, which was an outrageous time. We met Mark Moore from S-Xpress and John McCrea from CAKE (what a man)!
We play loads of festivals and gigs in Queensland, and plan to make it down to Sydney and Melbourne SOON, we promise. It's just a matter of time. Next up is playing the Queer Film Festival with the Scissor Sisters' tour DJ Sammy Jo, a gig with James Cruickshank (The Cruel Sea) and The Stress of Leisure, and running an awesome undergroung club night called ouTsideRs that causes havoc and chaos every month!
Oh, and we've got videos on youtube. Recently Leonard Cohen saw the cover we did of his 'Gypsy's Wife' - which also incorporates Pat Benatar's 'Love is a Battlefield' (of course) - and he emailed us saying it was 'terrific' and that he is 'still recovering from their stab of beauty'. Legend.
And we appeared in Junior Senior's video for 'Can I Get Get Get' - you know, the one with JD Samson and Peaches in it!
Being Maiden Speech is too much fun - if only Countdown and SMASH HITS were still around, we'd be in our element.
Hope to see you at a show or on myspace soon.
