Pixies to headline inauguralSouthern Roots Festival
Fri 2nd Feb, 2007 in Local News
Hobart has joined the trend of Australian locations with a huge, Easter weekend music festival.
The inaugural Southern Roots Festival is one more stop on an ever-growing mid-year festival circuit, with organisers enticing the cream of the national and international artists touring at the time to head south for a day.
Headlining the event will be the Pixies, a band that hardly needs any introduction. Since reforming in 2004, there were consistent rumours that they would be heading to Australia, which were confirmed last year when they were announced as headliners for the V Festival. After adding the Southern Roots Festival to their V Festival appearances audiences across the nation are going to get a rare chance to see them live.
The Pixies will be joined on the line up by English band Gomez, indie icons the Lemonheads, Ben Kweller and a host of locals, like the Vines, Tex and Tim, Wolfmother, Angus and Julia Stone and Pnau, with more artists to be announced in the coming weeks.
The Southern Roots Festival will be held at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds. On the northern fringes of Hobart, the Showgrounds are expected to hold 14,000 fans, and if the speed at which tickets sold out for recent Falls Festivals is anything to go by, organisers may well be expecting a capacity crowd.
An internet-only allotment of discounted tickets will go on sale for 48 hours only from 9am Thursday, 8 February via www.thedwarf.com.au and www.southernrootsfestival.com.au for $89 (plus booking fee). General tickets will then go on sale from selected outlets on February 15 for $96 (plus booking fee).
