This weekend is the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (in WA, at least) and with the huge amount of gigs going on around WA, you’ve got no excuses not to get out and catch some great live music.

The Grates kick things off on Friday night, as they bring their Science is Golden tour to WA with a gig at Metropolis Fremantle. For those of you in Mandurah, the band will be making their way down to Player’s Bar for a gig on Saturday night. The Silents and New Rules for Boats support at both shows.

For those of you who like it a little faster and, er, louder, The Casanovas will be hitting Mojo’s in North Fremantle with Mr Sandman on Friday night before playing the Rosemount Hotel on Saturday night.

If you don’t mind packing the tent and sleeping back into the car and going for a road trip, you’ll probably want to check out the Wave Rock Weekender, located near Hyden, 340km east of Perth. Little Birdy headline the Saturday night of the festival, while Roni Size & Dynamite MC and Salmonella Dub wrap things up on Sunday night.

Sodastream, Gersey and Holly Throsby will all hit the stage at Wave Rock on Saturday, but if you’re not keen on the drive, you’ve got another couple of chances to catch all three on the one bill. The trio will play the Hyde Park Hotel on Friday night and will finish their WA tour on Sunday night at Mojo’s.

Miles Away have a big weekend planned, with two gigs on Sunday. They’re launching Brainwashed, their new EP, at an all-ages gig at HQ in Leederville and will dash across to the Hydey for Les Musique Festivale, where they’ll share the stage with the likes of Eleventh He Reaches London, Bus 56, Fall Electric and countless others.

If you’d prefer to have a dance this weekend, you’re spoilt for choice. On Sunday afternoon, Spring Fever takes place at the Fremantle Arts centre, where Roni Size & Dynamite MC headline, with Salmonella Dub, Boca 45 and a host of others to support. Less than 24 hours later, some of the world’s best dance and electronic acts will head to Northbridge for Parklife. Held at the Deen, the Street and the Shed, there’s no shortage of talent on offer. Coldcut, Krafty Kuts, Mixmaster Mike and Kid Kenobi all join a Parklife bill that also features a DJ set from New Order’s Peter Hook.

You’re probably already trying to work out a way of getting from Perth to Fremantle to Hyden to Northbridge in the space of a couple of days. To make things that bit harder, Hard-Fi, one of the UK’s best bands, will play their only WA show when they take the stage at Metropolis Fremantle. Support for the gig comes from The Simian Line.
