Watch: Johnny Rotten be a“sexist misogynist pig” onThe Project

UPDATE: 10/4/2013 – John Lydon has issued an official statement in response to his “misogynist” appearance on The Panel: “I am the enemies of governments and institutions, certainly not women. I’ve been married to one for 30 years. We love each other.” Lydon has no plans to make further comment.

ORIGINAL STORY:
Margaret Thatcher died yesterday but punk icon Johnny Rotten wasn’t railing against the conservative former prime minister. His foe for the day was the Australian media.

At the first stop on his tour with Public Image Limited in Brisbane last night, a jovial John Lydon greeted the crowd with a chipper, “Hello, Brisbane. My name is John. I can talk to anyone except Australian TV presenters. What a pack of cunts.”

The on-stage attack followed a bizarre interview on Channel Ten’s The Project that quickly descended into accusations of misogyny when host Carrie Bickmore cut Lydon off to ask a question about Thatcher. “Hey misses, shut-up!” Lydon snapped back at Bickmore. “Who ever you are shut up, shut up, shut up. Now listen, when a man is talking do not interrupt … stop it you sound like one of them dreadful loud birds I don’t like … You’ve gotta learn what manners and respect is; I’m Johnny “fucking” Rotten and I’m telling you a truth.” Lydon then ended the interview by complaining that all four of The Project’s hosts were shouting “like excitable children”.

The interview had been pre-recorded for the show and had been hyped on Twitter with tweets from Dave Hughes and Andrew Rochford alerting viewers that they’d see Lydon being “a total asshole” and a “misogynist”. The Project’s official account claimed “you won’t believe what he said to our panel!”. Following the broadcast of the interview, Rochford jumped to Bickmore’s defence, describing Rotten as a “flat out sexist misogynist pig”.

Rotten had a similar run-in with ABC Breakfast presenter and former Sky Hook Red Symons on air last month. In an “interview” that lasted just 90 seconds, Lydon called Symons a “fanny”, an “arsehole” and claimed he’d had a more interesting career than him. “I’m Johnny, you know, I’m a lad,” he said. “I’m a man about town, a man about the world.”

It was a totally different John Lydon that FL encountered when we spoke to the punk icon last month. He spoke warmly and candidly for 40 minutes, covering a wide range of topics including The Sex Pistols, Public Image Limited, death, astronomy, Judge Judy, phone-tapping and the secret world of international butter wars. I can't think of who I dislike more - Johnny Rotten or the panel of hosts on the Project.

Rotten is a twat. I'm sure Carrie Bickmore will get on with it though and continue to do great work with the programs usual guests - like homophobe and all round sack of shit, Steve Price.

what was Johnny Rotten even doing on the project? the thing had disaster written on it from the beginning.

firstly he has to be antagonistic because that's his schtick. not saying that's good or bad, but that's what you have to expect.

but i'm glad someone treated these presenters with the lack of respect they so richly deserve. why the fuck should john lydon care about the death of thatcher? - it was a predictable, braindead question in the first place. we already know that lydon stood against her sort of politics.

so apart from the 'be quite when a man is talking' bit (which i am guessing was said for more shock value than anything else), i think he handled that interview well, and with a sense of humour that surpasses anything these so-called comedians could ever muster. fuck em!

I think if you interviewed someone like Johnny Rotten on the day Thatcher died and didn't ask for his thoughts, you'd be a pretty poor interviewer.

that bird should shut up more often and let the blokes do the talking

But really, it's all part of the pantomime of television, how can anyone watch this type of show in the first place?

All that matters is PiL are fucking brilliant musicians and put on a fantastic gig in Brizy last night.
And it's Johnny's thing to make people think and argue instead of just digest.

that was weird. i'm not so sold on the whole misogynist accusation though. i think it was just his choice of words being misinterpreted (it's easy to see how). i interpreted it as "when someones talking to you don't interupt". it's a common phrase i've heard alot directed at both men and women. he happened to be be talking to a woman and already has a reputation of being an asshole. all the 'byrd' talk wasn't pc but not misogynistic either. it's just slang. thats just how i interpreted and i'm normally the first person to get annoyed by such comments.

gumbuoy

So if that's the case, I assume we'll see him come out with an apology, indicating that was what he meant, and he didn't mean to use mysoginist language?

Braveheart81

Surely that sort of result is a dream for the show. They get extra press out of what is essentially a boring non event.

To be fair to Lydon, Carrie did start asking him a question whilst he was mid sentence. It was the first time in the interview that someone (of either sex) interrupted him in the middle of him speaking.

You're spot on. He was still commenting on the prior question, she tried to talk over him to ask the obvious Thatcher question and had to do so be raising her voice. Then they all try to talk over each other, so it sounds like they are shouting....all under the influence of a satellite delay.

They chose to be rude to him rather than being proper journalists and giving him a chance to finish a sentence. This just proves the show is entertainment for the masses over reporting anything actually newsworthy.

Bring on PiL at the ENmore tonight! I will be "that guy" in the PiL "t-shirt" :)

It's really hard to care about whether he seriously offended her or not when the shows attitude to the incident has been:

'JOHNNY ROTTEN IS A DEPLORABLE MISOGYNIST AND WAS SUPER SEXIST AND OFFENSIVE TO OUR LOVELY CARRIE! WATCH IT! WATCH IT ON OUR SHOW! WATCH HIM BE SO TERRIBLE! ONLY ON THE PROJECT! WATCH IT!'

I understand that this is the exact kind of chest beating shit a news-tainment program like The Project goes for. But it's also a great example of how shit they are.

I completely agree. Obviously Johnny Rotten is a bit of a twat. He has a thirty five year history of acting up on air, I mean he practically invented that.

The feigned outrage is just a joke. Everyone got what they wanted out of the situation.

Napoleon Solo

John Lydon must be the most polite misogynist in history.

The Project will drum this up for the rest of the year in a desperate bid for relevancy.

I don't think what he said was misogynistic at all. Sexist yes. She shouldn't have interrupted him, he probably overreacted and didn't need to play the gender card. But he's Johnny Rotten. It's all a bit of a sensationalist beat up IMO.

There are far more damaging examples of misogyny in society that seem to get ignored by the faux outrage crew of the interwebs because they don't involve middle class white people.

Napoleon Solo

Napoleon Solo said on the 12th Apr, 2013

Who knows? One of the techies might have been advised by a producer to turn the volume up on Lydon's earpiece to rattle the cage. He did seem to complain about it after the interview.

eh, it seems a bit tongue-in-cheek. He said he is a 'master of the universe,' while doing a Nazi saulte, and then he sneered and shouted his own name ("Rotten!").

Why didn't The Project get up in arms about his undemocratic appointment as reigning Master of the Universe?
