Is this the GREATestsoundtrack of all time?

In an attempt to take some heat off releasing, you know, the actual movie, director Baz Luhrmann and executive producer Jay-Z have unveiled the soundtrack for the forthcoming The Great Gatsby.

The soundtrack to Luhrmann’s long-awaited 3D epic features a very impressive list of names including Jack White, Florence and The Machine, The xx and two Aussies – Sia and Gotye. As previously announced Beyonce and Andre 3000 have covered Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back In Black’ for the film, while Brian Ferry has re-imagined his classic track ‘Love Is The Drug’ and covered B’s ‘Crazy in Love’. The most surprising inclusion, however, is Jack White’s cover of U2’s ‘Love Is Blindness’ which first appeared on a tribute album to Bono and co. back in 2011.

A number of the artists worked alongside Luhrmann to create original music for the film, including Nero, will.i.am, The xx and Lana Del Rey, who penned her new single ‘Young And Beautiful’ especially for The Great Gatsby. A snippet from many of these are included in a new trailer for the film, released overnight.

According to the director, who has a reputation for making soundtracks as memorable as his actual films, we are now living in “the Hip-Hop Age” and in a statement published on Business Wire Luhrmann said that he has worked tirelessly to re-imagine the “Jazz Age” so vividly depicted in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, through this modern lens. “We want our viewers to feel the impact of modern-day music the way Fitzgerald did for the readers of his novel at the time of its publication.”

But seriously. If you're talking great movie soundtracks, it's hard to go passed The Blues Brothers or The Big Chill

I'd say either Pulp Fiction or Singles has the best soundtrack.

Some good shouts here. I think Scorcese does a great job, Goodfellas to me has a brilliant soundtrack. Who can listen to the outro of Layla without imagining all of those bodies in the meat truck, the garbage truck and the pink cadillac?

Trainspotting is an obvious one but I love that movie. Lust for Life with Renton running away at the start, Perfect Day with the overdose, Heaven 17 in the club and of course Born Slippy.

Drive was a good recent one, that whole sort of semi retro electonica thing that they had going on.

The Coens generally do very well too - I'd call The Big Lebowski a great soundtrack but i might be biased.

Did hearing The Shins in Garden State change anyones life? Maybe not but it was still pretty cool.

What about the Joe Strummer compiled effort for Gross Point Blank? Some great tracks on there including Rudie can't fail, Blister in the Sun, and the GNR version of Live and Let Die (the gunfight with the dude wearing headphones and playing the inexplicable Doom cabinet!)

Fight Club was great too - the dust brothers with great use of Pixies at the end for good measure.

No. Should there be?

FWIW, Ghostbusters, Matrix, MI2, all good soundtracks, depending on your mood.

It's all musicians who happen to be Sean Penn's friends doing Beatles covers.

Most of them are pretty good.
