Ready For Sydney FestivalFever?
Tue 15th Nov, 2005 in Local News
January generally means festival season – but for Sydney citizens, it doesn’t just mean a trip out to the Big Day Out. From January 7 to January 26, Sydney city will be crawling with culture, thanks to the annual Sydney Festival.
For most of the month, the city will host international artists from the art, music and theatrical worlds, and will present locals with the opportunity to see a lot of world-class talent – some of it for free! There’s ferry races, concerts involving massive drums and gunpowder, and weird video installations to tease your senses. Theatre groups from Poland and the US (and not only there!) will bring stories to the stage, designed to shock anyone who thinks that theatre’s stuffy and boring, while dance acts such as Chunky Move will prove that dancers don’t just wear tutus.
Musically, festivalgoers can expect to hear from hip-hop star Saul Williams, classic songwriter Elvis Costello (who’ll be playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Brodsky Quartet and Steve Nieve), Stereo MCs, Four Tet, Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, CODA, Chris Berry & Panjea, and the masters of Victoriana-tinged ickiness, The Tiger Lillies ... to name just a few.
It’s an eclectic month, so be sure to catch a couple of shows. After all, Sydney summer nights are perfect for a bit of culture-nabbing.
