Woman “seriously burned anddisfigured” by flare atSydney Soundwave

UPDATE 25/2, 10AM: More footage from the Bring Me The Horizon flare incident at yesterday’s Soundwave in Sydney has emerged. Here’s how the incident was described by the user who posted the clip on YouTube: “This is the second flare that was lit up in the BMTH crowd which was thrown on the top of the stage. The first one was thrown around a bit before hitting someone burning them pretty badly and starting a fire in the pit.” Watch below.

Meanwhile, FL’s Soundwave reviewer Rhett Davis has sent us an eye witness account of a similar incident during Metallica: “It was shot by a guy atop someone’s shoulder near the front of the pit. Security immediately started hitting it with a hose. No one was pulled out after the flare with an injury from what I could see.” Full report to come.

UPDATE 25/2, 9AM: ABC News is reporting that two more people were treated for burns following the lit flare during Bring Me The Horizon. Footage of the incident has also emerged. Watch below. About 900 people were treated at Soundwave for minor injuries, with 13 people taken to hospital.

ORIGINAL STORY: Soundwave Sydney has been marred by an incident involving a flare at Olympic Park last night. A young woman was rushed to hospital after she was burnt by plastic from a magnesium flare lit during Bring Me The Horizon’s performance on Stage 3 between 7.30pm and 8pm. According to reports in The Australian the woman has undergone emergency treatment after sustaining burns to her forearm. There have also been various social media reports of a similar incident during Metallica’s closing set on the mainstage (see photo above), however, no injuries have been reported.

Promoter AJ Maddah has described the alleged perpetrator as a “piece of shit” on Twitter. “Tonight you seriously burned and disfigured a young girl. I hope you fucking get yours,” he posted. “Massive awful burn on her forearm. I am devastated for her.”

He is now asking punters to assist in finding the person who lit the flare. “If you see anyone with a lit flare please take their photo and tweet to me so I can hand to police.”

Earlier Garbage were forced to cancel their performance in Sydney after flooding held up a truck carrying their gear between Sydney and Brisbane. “So sad we can’t play,” they tweeted to fans.

Soundwave began its lap of the country with an incident-free event at the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane on Saturday (February 23). Full report here. It continues this Friday (March 1) at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse before winding up in Adelaide and Perth. All dates are sold out.

as i said earlier this is really upsetting, what the fuck is wrong with people, it will probably lead airport security type searching at future events

Yeah, next time you're at a festival, and it's taking too long to get through security checks, you can thank whoever set off the flare.

apparently there was also a stabbing that hasn't been reported about yet

That's a bit of a baseless story until confirmed.

The OPs evidence is hardly reliable given the anonymity of something like reddit.

I'd really love to know what the fuckhead who brought the flare was thinking.

"I'll light this up in da pit then everyone will know what a mad dude I am! If it bothers ya, suck it up princess, dis is a metal festival not a splish-splash show! YOLO"

I'm surprised AJ hasn't plastered the photos of the guy all over twitter.

Someone must have had a word in his ear and convinced him that it is a police matter and to give them the photos rather than trying some sort of vigilante justice option.

[url=http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/breaking-news/police-praise-heavy-rock-concert-goers/story-fn3dxiwe-1226584663367]PARAMEDICS have cast doubt on organisers' claims that a girl was seriously burned by a flare at Sydney's Soundwave music festival.

At least two flares were lit as British band Bring Me The Horizon played to tens of thousands of fans in Olympic Park on Sunday.

The Ambulance Service of NSW says it did not treat anyone for burns at the event, but people may have received first aid for minor burns by St John Ambulance volunteers.

"We didn't transport anyone to hospital and I think St John treated three people for minor burns," an ambulance spokesman told AAP.

If AJ is exaggerating what happened it does seem completely bizarre.

Why would a guy who has spent ages complaining about being screwed over by having earlier finishing times and higher minimum age of punters forced upon him be making a bigger deal of the poor crowd behaviour than it actually was?

Surely he's playing out a self-fulfilling prophecy of having stricter and stricter controls over his festivals every year.

SMH was also reporting people being treated for minor burns.

had he said "nah nah she's fine nothing really happened" it would've been turned into "Festival promoter denies allegations of crowd violence"

instead he's coming across as the tough guy ready to fight against all evil with the unbeatable power of twitter.

Why not just state the truth?

The issue is someone bringing a flare into a music festival and letting it off in the mosh pit.

Someone could have been severely burnt, blinded or whatever from it. That is what he should be rightfully angry about. He could say that thankfully people only received minor burns from what was an incredibly stupid and dangerous stunt. Those people still had their festival ruined and will have painful burns that take weeks to heal.

AJ does love a bit of drama though. "minor burns" is a bit of a snore for him.

also, very good news that the story was untrue. i hate the idea of going to a festival with the risk that you might come home 'burned and disfigured'. worst nightmare.

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 25th Feb, 2013

Also, AJ couldn't have said any of those things, because that would require him to have the ability to speak/write in complete sentences.

It wasn't untrue, it was just not as severe. The risk of being burned and disfigured was still very real.

Small burns will still scar.

never let the truth get in the way of a good story...

at the end of the day its good to hear that it wasn't as bad as it originally sounded., it could have been much worse

Braveheart81

It just seems stupid on his part.

If SOPA said to him later in the year when he is trying to book the venue for SW14 that you let someone into your festival with a flare which they let off in the mosh pit which severely burned and disfigured a young woman and for that reason we are not going to allow your festival back here, he wouldn't really have a leg to stand on.

That's actually a pretty severe burn.

One of my friends believes it was the same person who let off both flares. There was plenty of footage of the guy at Metallica.

The little fucker has been identified according to AJ, his details have been handed over to police.

One case where camera/smart phones at a gig helped.

Dumbass had also boasted about it on facebook...

SENSE ^^

SO how can security let a flare get through!?!?!

(oh yeah, and who the frick would bring one (or two) of course but)

...seriously, all the pills in the world couldn't cause the harm of a FLARE in a HUGE CROWD (!!!!what???can't believe it tbh!!!), but they'll literally look up your arse for them if a dog smells a recently-smoked bong on you!!

NO-ONE should get BURNT at a festival, apart from sun-burn and the odd ciggie/joint accident.

i was here looking for a review of the sydney soundwave not this craziness

They have a sandwhich rule to make sure your not bringing too many sangas into soundwave and yeah, dogs to check your cavities, yet someone walks in with flares?

hahahaa... "the sandwich rule" could be a good name for a band...

welcome to police state sydney

it all began for the 2000 Olympics and just gets worse very year.

my mate got caught by a dog with 3 joints in amongst 20 cigs at soundewave 2011 and literally had a torch shone up his arse whilst bending over (and he's like an early-40s relatively straight dude), got a 6 mth ban from the venue and only got let in cos he ADMITTED he had the joints immediately upon scrutiny... but they still dacked him and bent him over.... (shaking head)

fortunately i got the 10 pills through... and the couple of flares ;-)
