Tool Australian tour announced

Tool have announced an Australian tour with four arena shows scheduled in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane this year.

This visit will be the first time that the prog-rock legends have been in Australia since headlining the Big Day Out and two sideshows in 2011. Reporting from their Melbourne gig at the Sidney Myer Bowl FL said, “It’s moments of whirlwind experimentation that separate Tool from the chasing pack, as they produce something quite intensely breathtaking to draw the crowd out of melody induced catatonia: a tremendous display of powerful, progressive, melodic and brutal art-rock poetry.”

FL spoke with Tool’s Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor last week to find out what the band have in store for fans on this tour. Jones – who is responsible for all the onstage visuals – said that while nothing was locked in just yet, he has some grand plans to make these arena shows something special. “It’s a process of talking our people [about a] budget and deciding how can we really push that budget and make it mind-boggling and dark and entertaining for people and, again, give them their money’s worth and have fun, so you just evolve with the ideas.“

He explained that the most important step before deciding on the visuals is choosing what songs the band will play: “The first step is picking the setlist and then going out there and setting up video screens and lasers and lights and smoke and seeing how you can make it apply and advance what you’re doing on stage.”

As for the setlist, both Jones and Chancellor remained tight-lipped about what fans can expect to hear come May, however they did teasingly divulge that the band is still “still in negotiations” about whether they will play songs, from their hotly rumoured new album.

If Tool tours in May, who the hell will headliner Soundwave 14?

I might check this out, but another expensive concert is the last thing my wallet needs.

I thought Tool were great at the Adelaide BDO. Very keen to them with a dedicated stage set up. Too bad they aren't touring with a new album.

deanoss

Touring 3 times on the one album...
To think that last time they played people were hoping for new material to be played. I don't see this tour being any different.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be in any rush to see these guys again. Especially not at 135 a pop.

i don't believe the "no new album until 2014" story for a second.
maynard is apparently focusing on puscifier but yet is touring with tool?

i predict a "oh by the way our new album is out tomorrow" statement any day now just like radiohead, mbv and nin have done recently.

oh and if nin are for soundwave '14 i will be there with bells on. big hairy bells. and balls too.

This is literally the fifth tour they've done without a new album.

If they aren't as awful as 2011, I'd consider it.

So if the shows aren't as bad as 2011, you'll consider going to them even though they've already happened?

I'd sit here and think, "I could've gone to that and it might have been pretty good," to myself.

Oflick

Yeah, the use of the word "recently" made me think they'd released something recently. But then I looked it up and I guess they're just referring to the slip.

Anyone have an estimate of how quickly this is likely to sell out? I've only just recently started listening to Tool and won't be able to try for tickets until a few hours after they go on sale.

Likely to sell out quickly? Is there a large fanbase here?

tyler07

tyler07 said on the 11th Feb, 2013

I'm predicting this won't sell-out at all.

Oflick

Oflick said on the 11th Feb, 2013

It'll probably sell well enough to justify the size of the venues they're using, but I don't think it will sell out. If it does sell out it probably won't happen until much closer to the date.

But who knows, really. I could be wrong and it could sell out straight away. What do I know? I'm not qualified to make predictions about how well something will sell.

against my better judgement against watching a band on 4 occasions touring for the one album, I've secured GA tix to the Sunday show at Rod Laver. Figured GA was too good to turn down

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 18th Feb, 2013

Surely they're not just pushing 10, 000.

The only good thing about their disappointing 2011 show was their set list being free from the focus of one record. It was nice to hear Third Eye.
