Bob Dylan set to playSplendour in the Grass?!

Bob Dylan, meanwhile, will have turned 72 when he plays the Sydney Opera House and Byron Bay’s Splendour in the Grass in July.”

Has Sydney Morning Herald writer Damien Murphy unwittingly leaked a huge tour announcement? Murphy made the startling claim in a brief article while rattling off a list of pensioners set to tour Australia in 2013 including Sir Cliff Richard (72), Allen Toussaint (75), Supertramp’s Rodger Hodgson (62), Jimmy Cliff (64), Iggy Pop (65), Bettye LaVette (66) and Taj Mahal (70).

A headline set from Dylan does seem to be out of step with past Splendour acts, however, organisers may’ve tested the waters last year with a tribute to Dylan’s 50-year career from Eskimo Joe’s Kav Temperley, Jebediah’s Kevin Mitchell, Holly Throsby, and The Grates’ Patience Hodgson. However, promoter Jess Ducrou told FL last year that she was keen to see the festival broaden its appeal with its move to a new site at Yelgun. She said she didn’t want Splendour to be a “typical 20-something event [dominated by] triple j orientated artists”. Ducrou explained that the festival has been working for a long time to get an appropriate venue to expand and trying to broaden Splendour’s appeal to fans ranging from “seven to 70 years-old.”

Dylan last visited Australia in 2011 stopping in at Bluesfest and playing shows in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Wollongong and Sydney on his “Never-Ending Tour”. While the tour received mixed reviews, FL’s reviewer in Melbourne said “most of the songs on the generously long set list were given full bodied blues and rock n’ roll treatment; Dylan’s backing band running a tight, if not at times overly slick, ship through the night”. Last year Dylan released his 35th album Tempest lead by the single ‘Duquesne Whistle’.

Other Splendour 2013 tips include OutKast rapper Big Boi, who announced last month that he’ll be touring Australia in July and Polyphonic Spree, who leaked their place on the bill via Twitter.

He'd only be good for Splendour if he promised to play a greatest hits set (like Brian Wilson did a few years ago).

If he played mostly current stuff it would be hard to see him working.

i doubt if he played the hits anyone would recognise them.

I think it could work. Surely Dylan wouldn't be any more out of place than Neil Young was at BDO 09. I mean, I know that wasn't the best selling year, but it wasn't a complete failure (to my knowledge, at least).

Neil Young tore every act at that BDo a new one.

Really?

All Along the Watchtower
Knockin on Heaven's Door
Like a Rolling Stone
Hurricane
Rainy Day Woman
Subterranean Homesick Blues (although people will think it is a Radiohead cover)
The Times They are a Changin
Blowin' in the Wind
Mr Tambourine Man

That's a fair few hits that are really well known.

I meant that he hardly plays a traditional version of his own tunes anymore. He's completely reworked most of them - a fair few almost unrecognisable until he starts singing the lyrics.

I certainly don't doubt people knowing most of Dylan's classics.

Yeah... he doesn't exactly have a recognisable voice anymore

I thought he was terrible at Bluesfest, forgetting the lyrics, mumbling the lyrics, maybe it was just an off performance, if he does play I sure he gets his act together..

Deadmau5 should headline Splendour!

I think that's what Jess Decrou wants to change - get a different kind of punter.

i imagine it will be bob playing reasonable sized crowd n the presets playing to a packed out crowd and the polyphonic spree being in a horrible time slot

I was thinking Dylan would play a headlining spot on (what is currently) the GW McLennan tent. Get a buzzband in the main stage (probably the Wombats), Presets in the dance tent, and Dylan on the more relaxed softer stage.

I haven't met anyone that has seen Dylan in the last decade and enjoyed it.

Speculation a while ago about a tour of Japan in the (US) spring/summer that might fit with this - http://www.bobdylanisis.com/contents/en-uk/d109.html

Despite the fact Dylan is a huge name, would this be a particularly big get for Splendour considering its not too long since he was last here? I don't mind the idea of trying to change the punters though (especially considering the particularly bogan crowd of last year...)

I enjoyed seeing Dylan on his last tour, but I'd like to see him solo next time.
.. no band, just him, an acoustic guitar and his harmonica.
