Madchester legends Happy Mondays have announced their first Australian tour in over 10 years, with shows scheduled in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth this May.
Arriving on our shores only one month after fellow acid-ravers The Stone Roses will have played Future Music Festival, The Mondays are bringing their original lineup – Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul Ryder on bass, Gary Whelan on drums, backing vocalist Rowetta, Mark Day on Guitar, Paul Davis “PD” on keyboards and dancer Mark “Bez” Berry – Down Under for four headline gigs. While the Happy Mondays toured Australia in 2001 as part of the Big Day Out lineup this tour in May will be the first visit from the group’s original lineup.
After years of various changes the “definitive” Mondays lineup embarked on a worldwide reunion tour in 2011 and started work on their first album since 1992’s _ Yes Please!._ Speaking with with The Chronicle about the reunion Shaun Ryder said: “We are all older, no problems with each other. A lot of us hadn’t seen each other or been in the same room for 19 years. We’re now just a bunch of crazy old men, really. Nobody has really changed apart from the fact we are all older and just a little bit quieter. There are still the same characters, just a bit more grown up. Grown men with behaviour problems.”
