Gold Coast Big Day Out “asgood as gone”
Thu 3rd Jan, 2013 in Local News
The Big Day Out organisers have revealed that the Gold Coast is likely to lose the event next year.
BDO chief Adam Zammit told the Courier Mail that the festival is “as good as gone” and admitted that the festival is searching for a new venue. According to the Courier Mail, a move to a site at Helensvale (45 minutes from Brisbane and just over 20 minutes from the Gold Coast) was blocked by the State Government and Zammit is now looking at new sites in northern NSW and Queensland.
The festival has been staged on the Coast since 1994 but will be forced out due to the decision by the Queensland State Government to redevelop the Parklands showgrounds into an athletes’ village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Losing the festival will be a blow to the city’s tourism industry, with many punters travelling from interstate and other parts of Queensland to attend the event and injecting millions of dollars into local businesses. Last year’s event attracted just 38,000 fans, but in the past it has attracted crowds of up to 45,000.
The “final” Big Day Out at the Gold Coast Parklands will be held on Sunday, January 20.
