Gold Coast Big Day Out “asgood as gone”

The Big Day Out organisers have revealed that the Gold Coast is likely to lose the event next year.

BDO chief Adam Zammit told the Courier Mail that the festival is “as good as gone” and admitted that the festival is searching for a new venue. According to the Courier Mail, a move to a site at Helensvale (45 minutes from Brisbane and just over 20 minutes from the Gold Coast) was blocked by the State Government and Zammit is now looking at new sites in northern NSW and Queensland.

The festival has been staged on the Coast since 1994 but will be forced out due to the decision by the Queensland State Government to redevelop the Parklands showgrounds into an athletes’ village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Losing the festival will be a blow to the city’s tourism industry, with many punters travelling from interstate and other parts of Queensland to attend the event and injecting millions of dollars into local businesses. Last year’s event attracted just 38,000 fans, but in the past it has attracted crowds of up to 45,000.

The “final” Big Day Out at the Gold Coast Parklands will be held on Sunday, January 20.

it will suck moving away from the gold coast. the vibe has always been fun, hot summer days then head to the beach the next day. the whole weekend in surfers is awesome. brisbane is always so stinking hot. and besides, you don't get the hot, shirtless, surfer guys anywhere else! please keep it one the goldy! the v fest site was ok. i hope the council doens't kick it out of the gc completley.

tyler07

Fuck! I love having BDO on the GC :'(

They should definitely just move it to the RNA showgrounds. It seems like that would easily be the best and most appropriate option to keep it in south-east Queensland.

Brisbane already plays host to Soundwave, Future, Harvest, Parklife, Stereosonic and Laneway.
I think you lot have already got it pretty damn good in comparison to the Gold and Sunshine Coast when it comes to travelling mate. If BDO moves to Brisbane then all that leaves us with is Summafieldayze and Good Vibes (if it ever comes back?!).
Which is pretty piss poor from our useless State Government. 18 years of history sacrificed for a second rate Sporting event that was pretty much handed to us by default (Sri Lanka our only challengers).
Why should the Gold Coast be given the rights to host an international sporting event when we can't even keep local sides in the national comps (Soccer, Basketball), and our existing league and AFL sides' attendances lessen with each year?

berlinchair101

I semi-understand the BDO v Soundwave thing, but I was pretty shocked to see people on the FB post commenting with glee about the potential loss of a music festival. What kind of music fan wants to have less opportunities to see music?

Especially in Queensland who are so oft snrubed.

Cpt_Pugwash

Cpt_Pugwash said on the 4th Jan, 2013

Yeah, cos the Commonwealth Games won't attract any tourists, at a national or international level. Criticise the decision (it's not a bright one) but at least come up with decent reasons to do it.

Nah, I think the stupidity of it stands for itself.

OrdinaryInfidel

OrdinaryInfidel said on the 5th Jan, 2013

Yeah I'm referring to Perth. But not just this year's compromise. Ken & co have been at odds with Claremont Council for years and have had issues with Bassenden and Fremantle councils previously.

And I'm not too sure that this year's earlier closing is a good result for BDO. Why have these sort of issues not arisen with SW when it's at the same venue ?

I thought that Gman's description of the NRL was quite apt, the majority of the fans are degenerates. I place them lower than NASCAR fans.

The Big Day Out had a good run in the 2000's but it has been on the decline, a scaling down was always on the cards. I don't believe that the live music landscape will change if the BDO was to disappear from the festival circuit.

hearsz

hearsz said on the 5th Jan, 2013

Well of course the Games will bring in money, attract tourists. But what after that? Having lived on the coast for 30 years I can tell you that the locals weren't exactly "buzzing" when we were awarded the games.

My main issue is that the QLD Government are sacrificing 18 years of QLD Music History for their own personal agenda.
They're not even bothering to hear what locals, or anyone who has been organized with the festival as far back as when it first started, have to say. And what's even worse is the BDO chief, Adam Zammit is believed to be looking to potentially move it to a site in Northern NSW!! Which would make your drive a tad bit further mate!

And Townsville have put in a bid now. No offense to locals up there, but can anyone seriously see 40-50,000 travelling there for the event, even with a great line-up? And if this stupid cruise ship terminal actually goes through at Main Beach, the Gold Coast could lose Summafieldayze as well.

Could end up anywhere now, though Brisbane has yet to be mentioned as an option.

Not sure if this has been posted somewhere already:

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/musicnews/s3668155.htm

Queensland tourism minister Jann Stuckey has revealed the Big Day Out will stay on the Gold Coast for at least the next five years.

The future of the GC leg of the festival had been in doubt ever since the State Government announced plans to redevelop its current Parklands site to make way for an athlete's village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

In the week since that news broke, BDO CEO Adam Zammit had been looking into other options for the festival in Queensland including Townsville, Cairns and Mackay.

But Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey has now confirmed the festival will remain on the Gold Coast after a deal was reached with organisers.

"This agreement lays to rest any speculation about the future of the Big Day Out not remaining on the Gold Coast," Minister Stuckey said in a statement.

A new Gold Coast location for the festival is expected to be announced soon.

i just love how 18 yrs of music history is so important in the assessment of the LNP govt record in Qld. It's pissall compared to the changes that are likely to occur in the next 12 months ... plus as the post above states its staying - nothing like a bit of publicity just before an event huh
