The "real" Hottest 100 of 2012

Icelandic folk and novelty hip-hop songs may lead bookies predictions for top honours in the 2012 Hottest 100 but they barely rate a mention in the “real” Hottest 100 – triple j’s most played songs of 2012.

The list released by J-Play reveals that triple j’s most played song of 2012 was ‘Can’t Get Better Than This’, the debut single for Australian duo Parachute Youth. Released in January last year, the song had plenty of time to rack up spins and was the most played song on triple j’s Good Nights and Lunch programs. Tame Impala’s ‘Elephant’ was the most played track on Tom and Alex, while Zan Rowe preferred Major Lazer’s ‘Get Free’ to kick off the day on her timeslot. If you listened to triple j on your drive home from work you were most likely to hear Pez asking ‘Where Ya Been?’. The top track on Home and Hosed was Sugar Army’s ‘Hooks For Hands’. For the top ten list for each timeslot head to J-Play

While Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ bargain anthem ‘Thrift Shop’ leads the bookies predictions for the Hottest 100 the song only just made the list at #96. The novelty tune is the short priced favourite to win the poll with SportsBet offering a mere $1.50 to punters keen to back the song while second favourite in the betting, Of Monsters and Men’s ‘Little Talks’, failed to make the list of most played songs.

However, airplay doesn’t necessarily equal votes – the most played song on triple j in 2011 ‘Helena Beat’ by Foster The People came in at #15 in the 2011 Hottest 100.

Proving the station is well and truly hitting its Aus music quota 56% of the most played songs on triple j in 2012 were Australian with Parachute Youth, Twinsy, Loon Lake, Dialectrix, and The Preatures all cracking the top 10.

LOVE the guy beatboxing. When I first heard it, I was disappointed they were using a recorded beat, then saw the guy, and thought FUCK YES.

The only thing missing is the line from the end, "Not giving a fuuuuuuuuuck."
