What we bought at indie recordstores in 2012

Tame Impala“s Lonerism may’ve topped every critics poll known to man this month, while Frank Ocean, Jack White and Kendrick Lamar captured the critical hivemind like few others in 2012, but did all that acclaim really translate to real-world sales?

To find out we polled independent record stores in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide on their top sellers for 2012 (stores in Perth and Hobart didn’t get back to us by deadline) – and the results were expectedly diffuse. At Repressed Records in the Sydney suburb of Newtown, Royal Headache’s self-titled debut album was the store’s biggest seller for the second year running. “It sold out months ago too,” said owner Chris Sammut, whose employee Nic Warnock put the record out on his R.I.P Society imprint in 2011.

Over at Beatdisc in Sydney’s West, it was a similar story. While The Gaslight Anthem’s fourth album Handwritten topped overall album sales, Royal Headache came in at second and fifth in CD and vinyl sales, respectively. Perhaps that infamous Black Keys support really did pay off?

At Melbourne’s Polyester Records it was all about Cat Power’s comeback album Sun. “Cat Power topping a Polyester bestsellers list wouldn’t come as a huge surprise to many,” admitted owner Nathan Nott. “That being said it was a really refreshing album from Chan Marshall and one we’re anticipating seeing her play live early next year.”

Encouragingly, nine out of Polyester’s 20 best sellers belonged to Australian artists including Tame Impala’s Lonerism (#9) and Chet Faker’s Thinking In Textures (#10). “There were five debut albums which is always good to see,” Nott told FL, “and impressive results for Tame Impala, Boomgates and Godspeed considering their albums came out much later in the year. Also hats off to Lower Plenty who did it all just off the back of a vinyl only release, the only album in our 20 not to have a CD version.”

I've never heard of Jet Black Cat until this article. Epic fail on my part.

It baffles me. I guess I should listen to lonerism to see why everyone loves it.
