Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwoodmakes Sydney cameo

Radiohead’s Australian tour may’ve wound up a few weeks ago, but the band’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood is in no hurry to leave apparently.

Not to be outdone by bandmate Thom Yorke’s surprise DJ set at Goodgood in Sydney and an appearance at boutique festival OutsideIn, Greenwood turned up at The Standard in Sydney last night with wife Sharona in tow.

According to Moshcam, Greenwood was there for a performance by electro-acoustic outfit Australian Chamber Orchestra, whose set included songs by David Bowie, Nirvana and R.E.M., as well as several works that the Radiohead guitarist had composed especially for the collective to play on the night.

Joined by his wife on tambura (a sort of long-necked lute) Greenwood surprised the crowd by performing a piece written by American minimalist composer Steve Reich. Here’s what Moshcam had to say about the performance: “The notoriously shy guitarist was met with a rapturous applause as he took to the stage, and after performing the memorising piece, ‘Electric Counterpoint’ in front of a hushed crowd, left again with a humble wave and a smile for all the onlookers.”

Earlier that evening, Greenwood was reportedly seen chatting and mingling with fans and friends as he watched the opening set and an installation piece by Jon Frank.

Radiohead’s five-date national tour wound up at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on November 17. Writing on the penultimate gig, also at Rod Laver the night before, FL reviewer Doug Wallen said the band had reconciled “all their impulses into an eerie, virtuosic whole”. Full review here.
