Nick Cave and The Bad Seedsreveal NSFW album artwork, tracklisting

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds have revealed the striking NSFW cover art for 15th studio album Push The Sky Away, due for release of Friday, 15 February 2013.

The black and white artwork shows Nick Cave pulling back window shutters to reveal a naked woman, whose face is artfully obscured by her hair. It is the 11th Bad Seeds record to feature Cave on the cover and the first to include a woman, although 1990s The Good Son featured Cave playing piano surrounded by four young girls. There has been no detail provided about who the female model is, however, given that Cave’s wife Susie Bick has a history of modelling for album artwork – The Damned’s Phantasmagoria and Roxy Music’s The Best Of Roxy Music – there is always a chance she has come out of retirement for the shoot.

Following on from a cryptic behind the scenes sneak peek on Monday the band has also unveiled the album’s tracklisting and posted a video online which reveals an immaculately groomed Cave and Warren Ellis recording with producer Nick Launay in a 19th- century mansion in the South of France. Would we expect anything less? While the footage doesn’t give much away, at one point Cave mutters dryly: “This is one of those nasty ballads.”

What the presser says…

“At the heart of Push the Sky Away is a naturalism and warmth that makes it the most subtly beautiful of all the Bad Seeds albums. The contemporary settings of myths, and the cultural references that have time-stamped Nick’s songs of the twenty-first century mist lightly through details drawn from the life he observed around his seaside home, through the tall windows on the album’s mysterious and ambiguous cover.”

What Nick says…

“I enter the studio with a handful of ideas, unformed and pupal; it’s the Bad Seeds that transform them into things of wonder. Ask anyone who has seen them at work. They are unlike any other band on earth for pure, instinctive inventiveness.”
