Bobby Gillespie on PrimalScream's new album: “Itsounds nothing like XTRMNTR"

“It’s a fucking great rock record.”

This is how Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie has described the band’s new album, which he says is recorded, mixed and due for release in UK “spring or early summer” next year.

According to the loquacious frontman, who spoke to FL ahead of his band’s headline set at Meredith Music Festival and a national run of sideshows, the record sounds nothing like XTRMNTR, despite contrary reports in the British press. “I don’t know where that came from,” Gillespie grumbled. “I can’t remember how that came about but it sounds nothing like XTRMNTR; fucking British music press. It’s got aggressive moments on it but it’s…pretty beautiful and it’s intense.”

Gillespie says that the record is quite a big departure from the last one – 2008’s Beautiful Future – and very much its own thing. “This is a different time that we’re living in. We’re different people and we’re a bit older and I think we’re expressing ourselves very well on this record,” he explained. “It’s pretty fucking out there … it is rock n roll but it’s psychedelic, there’s a lot of free rock on there. It’s very well-crafted songs but there’s a lot of experimental stuff on there. It’s very much a rock record. It’s not like a dance record. It’s a rock record … We’re really proud of it. We think it’s one of the best things we’ve ever done. It’s gonna be about 80 minutes long. There’s a lot of music on there. It’s a very intense album.”

Over the course of 30 minutes Gillespie also waxed lyrical about recording, the British press, UK’s ruling coalition, punk rock, and singing with Led Zepplin’s Robert Plant.

The full interview with Bobby Gillespie will be published on FL tomorrow.
