Vampire Weekend announcesingle Big Day Out sideshow

Vampire Weekend have announced a single Big Day Out sideshow. The New York quartet will play at The Metro in Sydney on January 23, giving fans a rare opportunity to see them at such an intimate venue. (The band’s last headline show in Sydney was at the much larger, 5500-capacity Hordern Pavillion.)

The festival had announced in September that Vampire Weekend would be exclusive to the festival but the band will now join Foals and Yeah Yeah Yeahs on a select list of acts that have decided to treat Sydney – and Sydney alone – to intimate headline shows.

For the past year, Vampire Weekend been working on their yet to be released third studio album, the follow-up to their self-titled 2008 debut and 2010’s Contra. Those in attendance at Vampire Weekend’s Sydney show (or on their Big Day Out tour) will be treated to a preview of the new record. While there is still no official word on the LP’s release, the band debuted the track ‘Unbelievers’ earlier this month during a Halloween performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Since the release of Contra keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij has been recording solo material and producing tracks for Das Racist, while lead singer Ezra Koenig has collaborated with Diplo on the new Major Lazer album.

Vampire Weekend sideshow:

Wednesday, January 23 – Metro Theatre, Sydney (18+)

Pre-sale tickets on sale 12pm Thursday, November 29; general sale from 9am Monday December 3

it feels like brisbane doesn't even exist. i highly doubt that a few shows here would drastically impact the bdo festival ticket sales, people who can be bothered travelling to the gold coast will do it regardless of a sideshow or two. and lots of people (like me) would probably go to both.

If you believe promoters, it has nothing to do with reducing attendance at local legs of festivals, it's because shows like this don't sell enough tickets to be financially viable.

Of course, that's IF you believe promoters. They're a bit shifty.

lineofbestfit

yeah they seem more post rock/90's bands. Mogwai, sigur ros have already played and godspeed are out feb so who knows who he'll get next year

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 28th Nov, 2012

dude, they're a perfect fit for a mid-late arvo slot at Harvest. Open, bright, summery pop, international band.

lineofbestfit

lineofbestfit said on the 28th Nov, 2012

death cab hate festivals aside from splendour it seems going by the times they've turned down bdo and they'll probably just be releasing the new zooey hate ridden record around then so they probably won't be here until 2014 i'd say.

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 28th Nov, 2012

but if they are to play the festival they would almost certainly be amongst the top 2 or 3 acts which would mean an evening slot. of course i'm just going by the demographics present at the Enmore when i saw them a couple of years ago. maybe i'm underestimating the diversity of music fans they attract.

gumbuoy

gumbuoy said on the 28th Nov, 2012

I wouldn't say they'd be top 3. If we look at the top 3 for the last two years it's

Beck
Sigur Ros
Mondo Cane

and

Portishead
The National
Flaming Lips.

I think they'd be in the next group of acts under the top 3.

RocknrollHendo

RocknrollHendo said on the 28th Nov, 2012

Mondo Cane in top 3? I don't think so. Cake, Grizzly Bear and Dandy Warhols I consider a bigger name than Mondo Cane, we ain't talking about Faith No More here.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 28th Nov, 2012

Whether or not Mondo Cane is a big name is kind of irrelevant. They put on a big, engaging show that was far more interesting for the crowd than either Cake or the Dandy Warhols.

I think Harvest is going the right way in terms of cultivating a good festival atmosphere and making it less reliant on the lineup to attract punters. This lets you book a couple of acts that might not be that well known but if the promoter is certain they will put on a great show then it will work because the punters have some faith in the type of acts that are being booked rather than needing to specifically like every act.

VW sold out the Enmore and Hordern quite comfortably in 2010. Sigur Ros and Flaming Lips have also sold out the Hordern but never any venues bigger than that. so i think it's safe to say that VW are in the same league in terms of popularity at the moment.

RocknrollHendo

RocknrollHendo said on the 28th Nov, 2012

Yes you're right, the festival had an amazing atmosphere, definitely the best I've experienced. Regardless of the line-up I will attend next year. I do beleive that Vampire Weekend would be a great fit at Harvest, perhaps play around the same time as Beirut did this year (late afternoon).

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 28th Nov, 2012

I wonder how similar their booking fees are?

Flaming Lips and Sigur Ros are both renowned for their live shows.

Even if they have a comparable amount of popularity on their own, bands like the Flaming Lips or Sigur Ros are far more likely to have success in headlining a festival and amazing people who don't really know their music.

lineofbestfit

lineofbestfit said on the 28th Nov, 2012

didn't foals sell out both manning and enmore yet they are at oxford arts, i'm all for intimate shows but whoever is booking these bands at venues like metro and oxford arts really need to do it at manning where at least it won't sell out in 8 minutes

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 28th Nov, 2012

As a general rule, why would you discourage bands from playing small venues?

For an increasingly popular band who have now become a frequent tourer, announcing shows in small venue is awesome.

Unless their third record is a complete disaster, I doubt people will get a chance to see them in a small venue for a long time.

They only had Mike Patton on the 3rd row because they didn't want the name to overlap on the leaf, it just fitted better with Grizzly Bear on the 4th line...I know AJ told me.
