Kendrick Lamar announces debutAustralian tour

With his status as hip-hop’s next big thing looking likelier by the day (hello 9.5 Pitchfork review), Kendrick Lamar has announced he’s headed our way for his first ever Australian tour. The hyped lyricist is hitting Melbourne’s Prince Bandroom, Sydney’s Metro Theatre, The Hi-Fi Brisbane and Capitol in Perth.

Shooting straight outta Compton, Lamar was signed to Dre’s Aftermath label and Interscope after the success of his 2010 mixtape Overly Dedicated and independent album Section 80. In addition to Dre, Lamar has already worked with a dream list of rappers including Game, Drake, Rick Ross, Pharrell Williams, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, E-40, Warren G, and Lil Wayne. He’s also a member of the Black Hippy crew, along with fellow West Coast rappers and label mates Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. Coming over for a whirlwind mid-December trip, Lamar’s tackling Australia to celebrate the release of his first major label album good kid, m.A.A.d city which gets its official Australian release this Friday, October 26.

Fans of good kid, m.A.A.d city might want to jump on the mix tape of samples used on the album put together by Babylon Cartel’s Gianni Lee and Mike Blud, which includes songs by Beach House, Twin Sister, Ohio Players, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West.

Kendrick Lamar tour dates:

Thursday, December 13 – Prince Bandroom – Melbourne
Friday, December 14 –The Metro – Sydney
Saturday, December 15 – The HiFi – Brisbane
Sunday, December 16 – Capitol – Perth

You're not African American either.

I also don't think someone who is of a specific ethnicity should use a racial slur about their own race in a joking way. It makes it more acceptable (or less possible to get upset) when someone else uses the term and also makes light of everyone else who has seriously suffered from racism in the past and present.

don't want to turn this into a debate about a word. but don't you think a word can change its meaning and impact over time? i've always felt that this word was a classic example of that. i can't remember the last time i heard that word being used in a hateful way but maybe that has more to do with the part of the world i've grown up in.

anyways. on topic. listened to Section 80 a couple of times now and very impressed. i've always really enjoyed hard hitting gritty rap music and this guy seems to do it better than most. need to give GKMC a few more listens before i make up my mind on it.

I often need to give albums a few listens before I get them but I was pretty much obsessed with GKMC on my 2nd listen. I've been mostly playing Kendrick all week.

"This video does not exist" is easily one of his greatest tracks. i'm most certainly jealous.

also. 20 metres from the front is not front and centre. 20 metres from the front is 20 metres from the front. going by the type of venues Kendrick plays, 20 metres is probably the back of the venue.

tyler07

Well, that was an interesting experience.
Kdot absolutely killed it, was absolutely amazing to watch him, and he had fantastic banter and seemed generally stoked to be here. Backstreet Freestyle, Swimming Pools, m.A.A.d city, and ADHD were wild. The encore of Hiiipower was tight as hell too.

However, that was truly the most awful crowd I've seen and would be lying if I said it didn't detract from the gig for me. There were at least 4 fights that I saw, people lighting up cigarettes and joints in an indoor venue, and just general depravity.

Overall though, Kendrick is definitely the present and future of hip hop.

Yeah he seems to do a run of earlier material at the start and finish on all the GKMC material from what I've seen, and that happened last night too.

Sort of have to agree with these sentiments for the Melbourne show last night.

Kendrick was great. Awesome energy, and an extremely humble guy. I also like the way he structured his set list, played 5 or 6 old songs and then launched into his GKMC stuff. Stoked that he played "Fuckin' Problems" as well. Massive tune.

The crowd was intense though. I was on the main floor and it was one of the worst moshes I have been in. There were big groups of blokes with absolutely no respect for the people around them. I hate hip-hop crowds as a rule, and I thought this would be a bit more chilled out, but it was the worst crowd I have been in. I stopped one fight which was about to erupt next to me and another girl behind me got pushed really badly and hurt herself.

I like a show where the crowd goes crazy, but this was too far.

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 22nd Dec, 2012

yeah i agree segments of the crowd were a little annoying. i got stuck behind one guy who was a pain for most of the night. but otherwise i thought the crowd was a lot of fun. i was in the middle and 5/6metres from the front for most of the night and thoroughly enjoyed myself despite the odd annoying dickhead. but i can't recall the last time i was in a "moshpit" and didn't come across a few dickheads.

as a side note. really enjoyed the cultural diversity of the crowd as well.
