Weekend Listening: San Cisco,Die Antwoord, Texas Tea

JODY MACGREGOR picks out the best bits of music this week—from Die Antwoord’s nuanced take on the obesity epidemic to San Cisco going wild.

You make everything groovy

All that whistling, sparkling and clapping, ‘Wild Things’ is so cheerful. But wait: “Stay away from where the wild things play.” There’s something a bit sinister going on under San Cisco’s usual happy pop, and the video plays that to the hilt with a crew of post-apocalyptic Lost Boys capturing San Cisco’s singers and getting Puritan on their arses. From their self-titled album due November 23.

Lady Gaga was not harmed during filming

Some musicians are about to kick some funky tunes, how pleasant. OH GOD, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS. It is the new Die Antwoord single, and it is ace. Ninja’s all tough and gangsta and “murder, murder, murder,” but Yo-Landi Vi$$er, who is tiny and high-pitched and wearing a yellow dress, is a million times scarier. “What happened to all the cool rappers from back in the day?” he asks. Yo-Landi ate their faces, that is what happened to them.

T is for Texas Tea

Brisbane country duo Texas Tea just released an album called Sad Summer Hits, but although ‘The Alphabet Song’ is about a break-up it’s not all that sad. It’s pretty charming really, one of those songs that spells out someone’s feelings starting at the letter A and seeing how far they get. The chorus goes “F, you see / it’s not about the ability / to swear at you just because I’m mad.” “F, you see”? I see what you did there, Texas Tea.

You put The Presets on the coconut

Senor Coconut, a.k.a. German composer Uwe Schmidt, has remixed The Presets’ ‘Ghosts’, and this is the kind of remix that will knock the original version out of your playlist. From the tropical intro to the big band stings that add punctuation marks to the end of lines, it’s like the 1950s all up in here. Even if you don’t like The Presets, you should give this a listen.

20,000 leagues under

This is all tension and no release, like Anna Meredith took the bit before the bass drop out of dubstep and made a whole song of it, a horn fanfare that seems like it’s never going to end, just pervading the rest of your life. ‘Nautilus’ is vast, it contains multitudes. It’s the first track off an EP called Black Prince Fury, which came out on October 15.

The vulture gazes also

Death Grips aren’t happy with giving away their entire noise-rap album No Love Deep Web for free, now they’re handing out a leftover song called ‘True Vulture’ as well. Like most of their stuff it sounds like RZA left The Wu-Tang Clan, got really angry, then teamed up with Aphex Twin. Only it also has Jena Malone from Sucker Punch in it, screaming and mumbling about Nietzsche.

All pink everything

Nicki Minaj specialises in pop songs about being invulnerable, here is another one. It’s one of the ones where she raps though, so you know it’s going to be good. The breakdown where the pounding bass stops and suddenly there’s some sensitive acoustic guitar playing is hilarious, but the video might give you seizures.

That Cassie chorus in the Nicki Minaj song is so awful! Otherwise great song

Funny how American media is all about the insult to Lady Gaga and the mural behind them in the song. If this was an Aussie band it would be all about the black body paint?

The Media outlets that see Die Antwoord as news worthy are on it. It's not as if Die Antwoord are played live on national television.

Hahaha yeah thanks for the research Nappy! I just clicked stuff like the examiner and stuff that were more mainstream and none mentioned it. Am waiting for them to notice. It has probably occurred via lazy journalism. Someone follows lady gaga on twitter, makes the news story, others do the same or copy and fail to notice what might be considered the most offensive part lol.
