Against Me! announce Big DayOut sideshows
Tue 9th Oct, 2012 in Local News
Already confirmed to perform alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Big Day Out, the punk rockers will put on a couple of intimate shows at The Manning Bar in Sydney on January 17 and The Hi-Fi in Melbourne on January 22. They join a slew of bands from the 2013 lineup who will be playing scaled back sideshows for their fans, including The Killers, Yeah Yeahs Yeahs and Band Of Horses.
Frequent visitors to our shores Against Me! were last in May 2011 to support their fifth studio album White Crosses. FL reported from their Brisbane show: “As Against Me! jumps straight into their first few songs, it’s immediately obvious the band treats their live shows like a trip to Wet N Wild. Lead singer Tom Gabel grins like a school kid who just stole the last cookie in the cookie jar. Bassist James Bowman conducts the audience like some mad punk-rock symphony of his own design. The drummer slashes at his kit like a Viking swings a battle-axe in battle.”
This tour will mark the first time the band has performed in Australia since Tom Gabel made the announcement that he has been dealing with gender dysphoria for years and will now live as woman under the name Laura Jane Grace.
Since beginning her transformation Laura Jane has spoken at length about how the decision will not impact the band’s creative output. She recently told one interviewer “However fierce our band was in the past, imagine me, six-foot-two, in heels, fucking screaming into someone’s face.”
