Amanda Palmer announcesFebruary tour

Amanda Palmer will be joined by her Grand Theft Orchestra when she returns to Australia in February to play shows described as part burlesque, part punk rock.

Palmer will be playing tracks from her most recent album Theatre Is Evil, as well as fan favourites from previous albums In My Mind and Map of Tasmania on the tour – and if you’re an uberfan you can probably join her on stage as well (provided you like beer and hugs).

After creating modern musical history by raking in $1.2 million from almost 25,000 rabid fans via Kickstarter to fund Theatre Is Evil, Palmer faced harsh criticism at the start of her current American tour when she asked for volunteer musicians to join her on stage for payment of hugs and beer. While Steve Albini questioned her actions many fans including Brendan Maclean, who played with Palmer for free on her last tour, leapt to her defence in an opinion piece published on FL.

“If your method in music is more a ‘prepaid fees and contracts’ thing than that is obviously a construct that will make everybody monetarily satisfied,” he wrote. “But it makes no sense for people to become enraged when fans, who just happen to be musicians, offer themselves to an artist that in their eyes has already offered them so much.”
