Green Day's Billie JoeArmstrong enters rehab afteronstage meltdown

Only 48 hours after launching into an expletive-laden tirade onstage at iHeart Radio Festival, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has entered rehab.

In the singer’s most punk rock moment since Dookie, Armstrong hurled abuse at festival organisers when the band’s set was cut short due to scheduling issues. Mid-way through performing crowd favourite ‘Basket Case’ at the Las Vegas event on Friday, a warning reportedly flashed up on a screen advising that the band had one minute of stage time left, triggering Armstrong’s meltdown. “Oh, fuck this shit. I’m going to play a fucking new song. Fuck this shit. Give me a fucking break,” the singer declared. “You’re going to give me one fucking minute? Look at that fucking sign right there — one minute. Let me fucking tell you something, let me tell you something, I’ve been around since fucking 198-fucking-8. And you’re going to give me one fucking minute?”

The band has since apologised for the tirade – which can be viewed in full below – publishing a statement on Green Day’s website announcing the singer’s admission into a rehab facility: “Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas.”

Armstrong recently revealed that Green Day is planning an Australian visit in “February or March” to mark the release of their new album iUno!. However, with all upcoming promotional events for the band now cancelled, their immediate touring schedule is in doubt.

iUno! is Green Day’s ninth studio album and will be released in three parts over a period of 5 months – September 21, November 9 and January 11.

I'd be pretty annoyed if Usher was headlining over my own band. I think Billie Joe should of tried a different approach still smashing the guitar was pretty awesome.

Guess you've got to promote a new album somehow these days.

No offence Quicky, but I'm pretty sure Usher would headline over any band you had, have or ever will have.

That meltdown was fucking awesome though, such a wild watch for a band who has become pretty tame. Will definitely be catching their shows here next year then.

Yeah, but when was the last time someone told Henry Rollins "You have 1 minute" as opposed to "Sorry, Mr Rollins, do whatever the fuck you want for as long as you want."

Melvins' bassist Trevor Dunn on the tanty: "There's nothing worse then some rock'n'roll brat throwing a tantrum and going AWOL just because he can't keep himself occupied. Yes, I'm referring to that little weasel in Green Day."

Oflick

I didn't know Trevor Dunn played with the Melvins. I guess he needs to play in at least onea band that Mike Patton isn't also a member of.

That's the main point I took away from Grattan's post.

Green Day announced today they will cancel their club tour that was due to launch in Seattle at the Paramount Theatre on September 26th and wind down in Tempe, AZ at the Marquee Theatre on December 10th. Tickets for these clubs shows will be refunded at point of purchase.

Additionally, Green Day will postpone all scheduled appearances for the months of January and February 2013. New dates for these rescheduled shows will be announced shortly and previously purchased tickets will be honored on the new dates.

“Obviously the timing for this isn’t ideal, but Billie Joe’s well-being is our main concern,” said Mike Dirnt. “We are happy to say that Billie Joe is doing well, and we want to thank you all for the outpouring of support and well wishes that we have received, and we can’t wait to see you all again soon.

Green Day also announced they would move up the release date of Green Day ¡Tré! to December 11, 2012 from its original date of January 15, 2013.

“We feel bad we have to delay our tour, so to make up for it we want to give our fans the music earlier than we had planned,” said Tré Cool. “If we couldn’t be there to play it for you live, the least we could do was give you the next best thing.”

So... uh... the rehab bills are getting real expensive. If you guys could buy all our new shit right away, that would be sweet.

The Twilight soundtracks are easily the best thing to come out of that whole mess. I rate that Death Cab song pretty high.

Green Day have sold what more than 50 million albums? I highly doubt 'they' or Billie-Joe gives a rats about some rehab clinic costs, that's ashtray money.

In truth they probably realise the promo/publicity stuff for this trilogy of albums is now dead so to placate all the fans getting their shows cancelled will just throw them out there. A PR/olive branch thing sure but I highly doubt there are any recouping rehab costs behind it.
