Only 48 hours after launching into an expletive-laden tirade onstage at iHeart Radio Festival, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has entered rehab.
In the singer’s most punk rock moment since Dookie, Armstrong hurled abuse at festival organisers when the band’s set was cut short due to scheduling issues. Mid-way through performing crowd favourite ‘Basket Case’ at the Las Vegas event on Friday, a warning reportedly flashed up on a screen advising that the band had one minute of stage time left, triggering Armstrong’s meltdown. “Oh, fuck this shit. I’m going to play a fucking new song. Fuck this shit. Give me a fucking break,” the singer declared. “You’re going to give me one fucking minute? Look at that fucking sign right there — one minute. Let me fucking tell you something, let me tell you something, I’ve been around since fucking 198-fucking-8. And you’re going to give me one fucking minute?”
The band has since apologised for the tirade – which can be viewed in full below – publishing a statement on Green Day’s website announcing the singer’s admission into a rehab facility: “Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas.”
Armstrong recently revealed that Green Day is planning an Australian visit in “February or March” to mark the release of their new album iUno!. However, with all upcoming promotional events for the band now cancelled, their immediate touring schedule is in doubt.
iUno! is Green Day’s ninth studio album and will be released in three parts over a period of 5 months – September 21, November 9 and January 11.
