Big Day Out 2013 sideshows

Big Day Out have announced a handful of intimate sideshows, including one night at The Metro in Sydney and The Palace in Melbourne for headliners The Killers.

The scaled back events aim to give fans the chance to get up close and personal with their favourite bands on the Big Day Out lineup, most of which will have new material to show off when they reach our shores in early 2013. Speaking to FL about the changes earlier this year BDO founder Ken West said: “What the main principle of the sideshows is, if any [band] really wants one they can have one. Part of the problem is that [bands] are doing big crowd shows at sideshows and they should be doing something more intimate instead to make those shows much more special. We have plans afoot down the track to try and get [bands] to perform other projects as their sideshows, because a lot of the acts have different projects.

The Killers released their fourth record Battle Born on September 14. You can read FL’s first impressions here.

Now I get it. You judge the quality of television programs on how attractive you find the cast. Your love for Downton Abbey is based purely on how much you want to fondle Maggie Smith.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs next week!

Venue was oversold. Really really packed in.

Gambeezy played for about 1 hour, 15 mins. Mostly Camp material but his Culdesac, Royalty mixtapes got a few airings as well as stuff from EP.

Steve G Love joined him on stage for some great freestyles. His band were pretty great, a lot of electric violins ha ha. His bass player is a monster.

I got very sweaty. He drops Freaks and Geeks pretty early so make sure you get there on time if you only know his big songs.

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed BOH last night.

They're not the most exciting live band but they played well and the setlist was good. They could have probably cut 2 or 3 songs that dragged in the middle and made the set 10-15 minutes shorter.

Bridwell needs to work on his stage craft a bit. He tries to engage the crowd but it was hard to hear the little bits of banter and he never quite captured the crowd completely.

Some of the harmonies were excellent. Particularly when Ryan Monroe was singing and Bridwell and Ramsey were singing harmonies.

Anyway, it was a really good night. Excited to follow it up with Foals tonight.

The Killers were in fine form last night at the Palace in Melbourne! Small theatre, little stage, no pyrotechnics, but they carried it. A few setlist surprises thrown in to keep things fresh too. I thought the new Battle Born album songs held up really well live.

I am stoked they seem to be getting rave reviews this tour, and last night was certainly the best gig I've seen amongst the 8 or so I've been to of theirs.
