Massive week of announcements:Bluesfest, Big Day Out,Soundwave, Sugar Mountain

The next week or so is set to be a serious wallet punisher with a series of tour announcements from Laneway, Bluesfest, Big Day Out, Soundwave and Sugar Mountain all scheduled to drop in the next 10 days.

Bluesfest

The first announement for Bluesfest 2013 will be unveiled this Thursday (September 20).

Organisers are reportedly planning “a really special” announcement, featuring “favourites coming back; great new discoveries; legends, and artists you will be able to say you saw first at Bluesfest”.

In June, Bluesfest launched a lineup guessing game with their own “Guess Who” challenge asking fans to guess 10 of the artists that will be on the festival’s first announcement. Guesses posted in the FL forums included Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel, Bill Withers, Willie Nelson, Patti Smith, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Paul Simon and Dr John with the festival revealing that, “some of you folk over at FL are so close”.

The first announcement for 2012 included Roger Daltrey, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pogues, John Butler Trio, Buddy Guy, Maceo Parker, Bettye LaVette, Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle and Trombone Shorty.

Big Day Out sideshows

Update: Sideshows announced.

2013 Big Day Out sideshows are set to be announced tomorrow morning.

While the Red Hot Chili Peppers are exclusive to the festival, sideshows could be added for other bands on the lineup including The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, Band Of Horses, Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells, Foals, Alabama Shakes, Off!, Against Me!, Gary Clark Jr, Every Time I Die, Delta Spirit, Childish Gambino, Jeff The Brotherhood, and Death Grips.

Festival boss Ken West told FL in July that bands can have sideshows provided they’re “underplayed”.

“We don’t want to be hard selling anything,” he said. “Not that we are lazy, but we are trying to create some heat [for the festival]. Part of the problem is that [bands] are doing big crowd shows at sideshows and they should be doing something more intimate instead to make those shows much more special. We have plans afoot down the track to try and get [bands] to perform other projects as their sideshows, because a lot of the acts have different projects.”

Soundwave third announcement

Soundwave boss AJ Maddah promised he’d reveal the rest of the Soundwave bill once donations to a charity set up to assist DevilDriver and Coal Chamber vocalist Dez Fafara’s sister Kerri McCanna with the medical bills from her breast cancer treatment reached the $10k mark. The donations tally currently stands at $11168.39, including a generous $2500 donation from Maddah himself, and so true to his word Maddah has confirmed on Twitter that the remainder of the Soundwave lineup will be released this week.

English punk crew Sharks have already been inadvertently announced as part of the festival’s third lineup announcement due to “a fuck up” by Maddah on Twitter. Sharks were set to tour Australia last month as support for Pennywise and The Menzingers but the tour was cancelled when Pennywise singer Zoli Teglas injured his back. Maddah has confirmed that Pennywise will tour Australia soon promising “new dates and VERY special guests tba shortly”. It’s unclear whether The Menzingers will be still be part of the Pennywise tour or if they’ll join the festival tour, but Maddah has also promised they’ll tour soon.

Blink sidewaves

In addition to the third round of the Soundwave announcement, Maddah is also set to announce the Blink 182 sidewave shows on Friday, September 21.

Maddah jumped the gun last month by announcing a Brisbane sidewave show for the band at the Riverstage. However he later retracted that announcement tweeting: “My mistake. Blink sideshow will not be happening at Riverstage”.

Sugar Mountain

Update: Lineup announced.

The first lineup announcement for Melbourne boutique festival Sugar Mountain will be released today at 4:30pm.

Sugar Mountain boasted on Facebook that: “We’ve got one killer party brewing for the next Sugar Mountain!! Not to mention a few more parties in January worth getting all tight in the pants over! ..keep your ears n peepers alert!”

The festival in January this year featured Deerhoof, Tune-Yards, Thee Oh Sees, Shabazz Palaces, John Maus, Sun Araw, Prince Rama, World’s End Press, Lost Animal and more.

Laneway

And on September 26, organisers of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival will drop their “mega dream line-up” in its entirety for Australia and New Zealand.

Rumoured for Laneway 2013 include Japandroids, Divine Fits, Yeasayer, Mount Eerie, and Cloud Nothings. This year’s Laneway featured the likes of Laura Marling, Feist, Anna Calvi, Austra, EMA, and Cults, with a strong female bill expected again.

nervous about BDO sideshows. i was terribly unlucky with splendour sideshows clashing. hoping the same doesn't happen this time. keen for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gambino, Foals, The Killers and Alabama Shakes in that order of preference. good double bills will make my pants very tent like.

if Laneway is lady-heavy again i think Bat For Lashes, Sarah Blasko, Lisa Mitchell and Cat Power are a good shot plus Cloud Nothings, Japandroids and Yeasayer. a few Splendour 2012 acts would be great as well.

I think Cat Power has been ruled out for Laneway?
Bat For Lashes, Beth Orton & Sarah Blasko would be most welcome.

Bluesfest is going to be a good one I think too.

Elton is here in November and I thought the Swell Season were on hiatus. But Glen Hansard solo could be possible. I reckon Patti Smith & Neil Young for sure. Would also love to see Wilco &/or Calexico & Kelly Hogan.

And I'll also throw in my standard festival wish for either of these lineups - Shearwater.

I've been to four Laneway Festivals and I have to say that the lineup is pretty much always suited to my tastes.

I have never found it to be an overly great festival though. The sound has always been a bit average and both Sydney venues have posed problems.

When it was in Macquarie Place anything popular inside the Basement was impossible to get into unless you arrived really early. The second stage in the laneway got ridiculously packed up the front and the sound was terrible further back. Having a stage surrounded by concrete walls does bad things to sound.

The new venue at SCA is a nice venue but the bottlenecks make it annoying to get in and out of each stage and the sound is terrible if you arrive late and are too far away from the stage.

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 17th Sep, 2012

my only real issues with Laneway have been the lines for food otherwise i really enjoy the atmosphere. the only sound issues i've had was with The Horrors earlier this year.

but yeah a bulk of the music i listen to are new indie-type releases so Laneway will invariably cater to my tastes.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (assuming she is playing with band) will blow most of those main acts away. Not sure how well they are known outside the US, and they sound a bit mediocre/generic on record, but they put on one hell of a live show. One of the best I've seen in the last few years.
