Weekend Listening: Iggy Pop,Bat For Lashes, Big Scary

TOM MANN and DARREN LEVIN pick out the best bits of music this week – from Iggy Pop’s Betty Davis homage to reworked versions of tracks by Big Scary and New York’s MS MR, who featured in our FL Recommends column for September.

Iggy gets lucky

Reissue label Light In The Attic is celebrating its 10th anniversary by releasing a series of coloured vinyl 7”s featuring covers of tracks they’ve polished up for release. The first release in the series is a sludge-punk
take on Betty Davis’ classic ‘If I’m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up’ with Iggy Pop leering over a Sabbath-sized riff. If you ever needed to hear Iggy sing about wiggling his fanny this is the song for you. Upcoming covers in the series will include Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band covering Rodriguez and Sweet Tea covering Wendy Rene.

Bat For Lashes’ haunted men and women

Bat For Lashes’ new album may be called The Haunted Man, but following the release of ‘Laura’, the second single from the record is the tale of another haunted woman: ‘Marilyn’ (Monroe, not Manson). It’s a glossy, synth-heavy track that sees Natasha Khan in Lana Del Rey mode playing with American icons and singing about, “Turning into a Marilyn, leaning out of your big car.” The Haunted Man is due out on
October 15.

Twerps make breaking up sound sweet

Here’s a challenge to budding young writers: Try and review a Twerps track without using the word “jangle”. Picking up a few production tricks from their New Jersey BFFs and touring buddies Real Estate (notably some delayed guitars), the world-conquering Melbourne outfit have managed to make a make a break-up song (“We’re through,” Marty Frawley sings over and over) sound oh-so sweet. ‘Work It Out’ will be released on September 17 digitally and October 23 on 7” vinyl via Chapter Music/Underwater Peoples.

New Gods on your side

New Gods may be Melbourne’s latest “supergroup”, but there’s nothing arrogant about their name (it’s taken from a Meat Puppets track). The “gods” in the lineup are former Little Red members Dominic Byrne and Adrian Beltrame from Little Red, as well as members of Eagle and The Worm and Ground Components. ‘On Your Side’ is their first release, taken from an EP due for release in November. The guitars snarl with an intensity we rarely heard from Little Red, but with Byrne out front it gives you an idea of where the band might have gone with the follow up to Midnigh Remember if they hadn’t splintered into a series of new bands: Naked Badies, Major Tom and the Atoms and The Hondas.

Big Scary remixed by mates

Big Scary’s hushed lo-fi sketch ‘Bad Friends’ gets the remix treatment from two very capable friends: Adelaide/Sydney duo Collarbones, who take it in an ambient, almost glitch-y direction; and Vorad Fils (aka John Hassell of Seekae), who adds some chilled-out beats and understated textures. The remixes are in support of the world-wise release of Vacation, the duo’s 2011 debut. Big Scary are currently working on their next studio album.

Shadowy twin hurricanes

New York duo MS MR released their calling-card single ‘Hurricane’ earlier this year welcoming you to the “inner-workings of their minds”. Now they’ve been remixed (mindfucked?) by Twin Shadow. The minimalist remix is a shadowy twin to the original with the duo’s distorted voices echoing in space before the vocals are set free in all their R&B glory just before the five-minute mark. It will be part of the upcoming MS MR EP__Candy Bar Creep Show__, which is “streaming on the band’s Tumblr page.

Fearless Vampire Killers’ spaghetti western romp

Melbourne’s Fearless Vampire Killers go south of the border – the US border, that is – for a freewheeling spaghetti western about “the neglected desire of a fading man to travel to his childhood dreamland”. Features some tasty guitar tone and whammy bar work-outs, a spooky half-time breakdown and an obligatory reference to ponchos. The single’s B-side is a live favourite, a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Yer Blues’. They’re touring in October. Dates here.
