Sydney Festival unveils threeacts from 2013 lineup

Sydney Festival has unveiled three shows from its 2013 program, which will once again take over the Harbour City from January 5-27.

Already confirmed as headliner for Hobart’s MONA FOMA festival in Tasmania, David Byrne (ex Talking Heads) will return to Sydney’s State Theatre with St. Vincent and a brass band to perform music from their collaboration Love This Giant.

In his first year as festival director, Lieven Bertels has revealed a love of fashion announcing “Semele Walk” on the program – a show that brings together performers clothed in Vivienne Westwood couture and the opera Semele on a 30-metre white catwalk. The show will also feature Berlin’s chamber music ensemble, Kaleidoskop (dressed by Westwood) and the Sydney Philharmonia Choir.

Latin street circus sensation “Circolombia” will also be bringing their show URBAN to Sydney Fest in January. Described as a “gritty, no-holds-barred autobiographical show” the circus features “triple somersaults, backflips, [performers] propelling themselves through skipping ropes and from tetter-boards onto three-men-high human towers”. Circocolumbis is part of Sydney Festival Parramatta program a 15-day event that runs parallel to the inner-city festivities.

Bertels will also be reinventing the free opening night of festivities, now known as “Day One: An Opening in Three Acts”. In the tradition of past “Festival First Night’s”, it’ll feature free events in Hyde Park, Darling Harbour and The Domain, and promises “something glamorous, something fun and something very, very big”.

The full Sydney Festival program will be revealed on October 23.
