Have Tame Impala "ripped off"Baptism Of Uzi?

We thought the cover art for Tame Impala’s new single ‘Elephant’ looked familiar. And then it dawned on us – it bears a striking resemblance to the artwork for Melbourne psych outfit Baptism of Uzi and their 2011self-titled EP.

But the similarities don’t end there. Both covers were created by a guy called Leif: Baptism of Uzi drummer Leif Gordon-Bruce and Melbourne-based artist and creative director Leif Podhajsky, who worked on Tame Impala’s Innerspeaker, as well as with artists including Grimes, Canyons, Lykke Li, The Vines, Miami Horror and Gypsy & The Cat. Can you be-Leif it?

Speaking to FL last week, Leif Gordon-Bruce said both images were sourced from NASA’s image library: “We used this image – a NASA shot of Lake Carnegie in WA – cause we wanted to use something from the Australian landscape, and I’m from a little town in WA called Busselton, so it made sense, and looks psyched out too. Which I guess is exactly why they used it. We used the image in it’s raw form, but that other Leif guy, he’s pretty talented and has done a good job tweaking it.”

Still, Gordon-Bruce joked they haven’t ruled out taking further action. “Yeah, I thought that seeing as he stole our idea and made it better we’re gonna sue, and his punishment is that he has to teach us how to use them fancy artistic computer programs.”

‘Elephant’ is taken off Tame Impala’s forthcoming second album Lonerism, which is due out on October 5 on Modular Recordings. Like Tame Impala’s 2010 debut Innerspeaker, Lonerism was recorded and produced almost entirely by frontman Kevin Parker in “studios, planes, hotels and homes around the world”, and later mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT).

Similar effect but not necessarily ripped off. If two bands had a blank black album cover, is the first one ripping the other off?

The correct answer is that both would be ripping off Spinal Tap.

Did Bloc Party rip off The Music???

Are these the type of articles that FL are making a stand for?

When put right next to each other they don't look that similar, but I always confuse Baroness's Blue Record with Kvelertak's self titled album.
