David Byrne to headlineHobart's MOFO

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne will follow in the footsteps of PJ Harvey when he headlines next year’s MONA FOMA festival in Tasmania.

The Mercury reports that Byrne will perform alongside collaborator St Vincent at Hobart’s Princes Wharf No. 1 shed on January 20. The pair have collaborated on an album called Love This Giant, which will be released on September 10.

Now in its 5th year, MONA FOMA – or MOFO for short – is curated by Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes and surf rock group The Break, which he formed with Midnight Oil members Jim Moginie, Martin Rotsey and Rob Hirst. He told The Mercury he’s been trying to book Byrne for the past three years. “I think he’s the perfect artist for MOFO, because he crosses all these different fields of endeavour while always maintaining a freshness to his work,” Ritchie said.

Attending last year’s MOFO, FL described it as a “slow festival, leisurely paced: a relaxed ten day party with bursts of movement and noise attended by every kind of Tasmanian. Wealthy creatives, dread-locked hippies, loafer-sporting university students, and white-haired retirees all came together to nod appreciatively, twirl tendrils, lounge on beanbags and drink copious amounts of microbrew”. Past performers have included Grinderman, Wire, Amanda Palmer and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Tickets will go on sale when the full line-up is announced on October 5.

Singapore is the first stop for Laneway next year on the 26th. I wouldn't be suprised if Byrne/St.Vincent popped up on the lineup.

(or maybe just St.Vincent)
