Music premiere: The Mark OfCain ‘Heart Of Stone’

The Mark of Cain have followed up the 6/8 groove of ‘Barkhammer’ – their first release in 10 years – with a new single that recalls the band’s formative years in Adelaide.

Out on September 15 through iTunes, the sludgy, riff-heavy ‘Heart Of Stone’ is reportedly indicative of the band’s forthcoming LP, Songs Of The Third and Fifth, which is slated for release in November. Vocalist/guitarist John Scott explains: “Heart Of Stone harks back to our earlier days when we had more melody in our songs. It straddles in effect the earlier sound we had on Battlesick [1989] as well as the more riff focused hard grooves of This is This [2001].”

Songs of the Third and Fifth was recorded in Adelaide in 2008 after brothers John and Kim Scott regrouped with drummer John Stanier, who had recently completed a national Big Day Out tour with Battles. It was produced by John Scott and long-time “band associate” Tim Pittman (Feel Presents), and later mixed by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Cog, Birds Of Tokyo) in Melbourne. John Scott has previously described the album as “the best thing we have ever done”.

The Mark of Cain have churned through a staggering 15 drummers since forming in 1984. Henry Rollins produced the band’s breakthrough album, 1995’s Ill at Ease.

The trio will be touring nationally in 2013. Details will be revealed via their website over the coming months.

Songs of the Third and Fifth will be out through Feel Presents/FUSE on November 2.
