Decoding the second Harvestlineup announcement: 'A truck,a Wonka and a lady calledEileen'

Harvest’s second lineup announcement isn’t scheduled until Tuesday (we hope!), but those rumour mongers over at The Herald Sun have already started dropping some clues as to who might be joining Sigur Ros, Grizzly Bear and Beck in November.

Appearing to have caught a dose of rumouritis from his colleague Nui Te Koha, Mikey Cahill has published a few cryptic hints in his Rock City column, writing that the lineup announcement will feature “a truck, a Wonka and a lady called Eileen”.

So let’s have a go at cracking the code.

“A truck”
Could Harvest see the return of Silversun Pickups? Last here in 2010 for the Coaster festival and a run of dates supporting Birds of Tokyo, the band released a new album Neck of the Woods featuring “splashes of math rock, shoegaze, new wave, alternative rock, electronica and industrial rock” earlier this year and have been conspicuously absent from recent festival announcements. Then again perhaps it’s a tour from alt-country/Southern rock crew Drive-By Truckers who have sidelined as the backing band for both Neil Young and Booker T, and were last seen here for Bluesfest in 2009.

Update – 21 August: A tweet from Silversun Pickups has all but confirmed their place on the Harvest lineup. The band has retweeted a fan’s post “I’m hoping that you’ll be attending Harvest Festival in AUS this year” adding the comment “Hmm. Interesting…”

“A Wonka”

This one’s a little harder. Will Johnny Depp be here to play songs from his second career of cameoing on Shane MacGowan, Oasis and Marilyn Manson albums? Or Darwin Deez, who released a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired mix-tape called Wonky Beats? Maybe it’s that band Crazy P who had that song There’s a Better Place based on a Wonka sample? Or even Willy Mason (Willy Wonka, geddit?) could be returning for a few more shows after he completes his run of Australian shows with Mumford and Sons the week before Harvest kicks off? Basically your guess is as good as ours!

“A lady called Eileen”

Surely Mikey could have obscured this one a little better! This can only really mean one thing: Harvest has booked your favourite Celtic soul band, Dexys, to play at the festival. They might stick out a little on the bill if you only know them for their biggest hit, but they’d be no more left-field than The Family Stone’s set on the Harvest tour last year. The band formerly known as Dexys Midnight Runners resurfaced earlier this year with One Day I’m Going To Soar, their first record since 1985.

The festival’s boss AJ Maddah has confirmed the Dexys leak.

Harvest 2012 dates:

Sunday 11th November – Werribee Park, Melbourne
Saturday 17th November – Parramatta Park, Sydney
Sunday 18th November – Riverstage, Brisbane

Wilco Wonka?

Bit of a tenuous link, but a man can dream.

I know what the Wonka clue is. It's been staring at us in the face for years, but we haven't been paying attention. Just ignore every second letter and see the hidden message:

Dr John and/or DBT would be awesome, but both have other shows during Harvest

Willy Wonka was played by Johnny Depp, who also starred alongside Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom in Pirates of the Caribbean, a movie which I have seen, and I also enjoy the music of Bruce Springsteen.

Case closed.
