Laneway 2013 rumours:Yeasayer, Japandroids

The fine folks down at St Jerome’s Laneway festival announced on Twitter last month that they’ve “been busy working on what we think might just be the most amazing line-up we’ve ever pulled together… The line-up is frighteningly good and like all good things, the wait will be well worth it…” Now, there are a few hints starting to surface about the bands we could be seeing on that “frighteningly good” lineup.

Laneway festival 2011 allumi Yeasayer look to be a solid bet to be part of the 2013 bill with the festival tweeting “Anyone heard the new Yeasayer… Def an early contender for album of the year…” and the band’s vocalist Chris Keating telling triple j he and his band mates have an Australian tour in their sights: “Our plan is to be there in January.”

Japandroids are also a strong tip for the lineup. In an interview with Polaroids of Androids Brian King, the band’s guitarist and lead “bro-calist”, revealed that “From what I understand we’re coming in February. Don’t quote me on that quite yet but it’s already in the works for February. It’s been a long, long time over due. For a number of reasons we couldn’t make it there on the first record touring, but we’re not making that mistake again. So, February it is.”

The lineup for this year’s Laneway festival wasn’t announced until October last year, but with the lineups for other summer festivals such as Falls and Big Day Out already released we could see Laneway dropping their bill earlier than usual this year.

I'd like to see Laneway add one or two somewhat nostalgia acts that fit with the general theme.

While they're at it, Spoon could headline (or close to).

jacegalvin

Really hoping for Tycho. Japandroids will be amazing.

And I'm guessing some hyped bands from 2012 like:

Tribes, Crocodiles, Cloud Nothings, Purity Ring, Zola Jesus, The Men

And some bigger names like:

AIR, The Walkmen, Yeasayer, The xx, etc.

I'd like to purchase every ticket to one of their shows so it can just be me and them, and they can tell me all about how their day was.

AFTER THEY PLAY YOUNGER US OF COURSE!!!

I'd be happy to see Zola Jesus & Father John Misty again, both were great this year and I think both are very under rated.
plus Bat For Lashes (someone book her now!), the Golden Filter, Lonelady, Planningtorock, Niki and the Dove,
Iron & Wine, Midlake and John Grant.

I like the mentions of Four Tet. His latest stuff, that's veering heavily towards UK garage/future garage, fucking sleighs. I would love to see a live set and a dj set.

Titus Andronicus didnt make harvest, soundwave or falls, so hoping for LW instead.. They're not very Laneway-ey, but then neither or Japandroids really.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 9th Aug, 2012

I think Japandroids are laneway-ey.

As much as Le Savy Fav or Violent Soho.

Stugalug

Stugalug said on the 9th Aug, 2012

When you compare Japandroids to past Laneway acts like No Age, Les Savy Fav, Black Lips, PVT, DZ Deathrays.....you could say Japandroids aren't too much un-Lanway-ey. Not sure about Titus Andronicus though.

The Great Monkey War

The Great Monkey War said on the 9th Aug, 2012

Japandroids and Titus Andronicus are both Laneway-esque*.

* Laneway-esque = Pitchfork BNM.

Oh noes. That would imply the Killer Mike was Laneway-esque also.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 9th Aug, 2012

Japandroids would slot in quite nicely like Les Savy Fav did a couple of years ago.

Laneway needs a couple of bands like that every year I think. It helps balance out rest of the lineup which often has a similar sort of sound.

Would love to see the Dexys there but can't imagine a Laneway crowd going for it.

I reckon Bat For Lashes, Dirty Projectors, Crocodiles, Cloud Nothings are all likely (depending on what Harvest/Meredith gives us).

I don't think PiL fit Laneway at all, still would like to see them... they could sneak into Harvest though maybe?

Mazzy Star would fit nicely at either/both!

Sir Toire

Sir Toire said on the 10th Aug, 2012

Or PiL could go to SW, since they have pretty much confirmed it, I'm pretty sure.

Oflick

Oflick said on the 10th Aug, 2012

They'd be out of place at Harvest. but they'd be "PiL? That's an odd choice" out of place, not "what the fuck is PiL doing on this lineup?" out of place.

AJ said once or twice he was interested in bring them to Soundwave. Someone asked him the night before the announcement about PiL and he said no, but he might have just been talking about the first announcement.

As for the more realistic options/rumours/hopefuls, they look pretty good. If the lineup delivers I might just have to attend.

jacegalvin

jacegalvin said on the 10th Aug, 2012

Oflick, what PiL album would you recommend listening to first?

I've only heard the song Order Of Death.

Oflick

Oflick said on the 10th Aug, 2012

Depends; their first 3 are their best but they all have a different sound. "First Issue" is experimental but for the most part a fairly straight forward punk album; "Metal Box" is a post-punk/dance/avante-garde mess of awesomeness, and; "Flowers of Romance is very tribal.

I guess "First Issue" is the place to start; it's probably their most accessible (out of the first 3 at least).

Sir Toire

Sir Toire said on the 10th Aug, 2012

I think I read somewhere that PiL themselves said on Twitter that they would be in the 2nd announcement.

jacegalvin

First Issue isn't on Spotify and I'm too lazy to download.

So Metal Box it is!

haha, beat me to it, that's the first time AJ has ever responded to my question too.

I don't get how it will happen if it doesn't happen this or next year.
PiL are reformed and touring now, but who knows how long that will last
Hopefully they will just do their own tour
