Update:
If you needed any more evidence that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing Big Day Out we now have a confirmation directly from the band. Drummer Chad Smith has confirmed the news on Twitter answering a fan who asked “are you guys hitting BDO or not just tell usssssssssssdddd” with a emphatic “Yeeeeessssssssssss”.
Thanks to a tweet from bassist Flea we already know that The Red Hot Chili Peppers have confirmed an Australian tour for early next year, but some further details about the tour have been revealed.
Our favourite clairvoyant/music journalist Nui Te Koha dropped a few rumours about the possible lineup for Soundwave 2013 on breakfast radio in Melbourne yesterday, but on closer inspection those Soundwave tips weren’t the most exciting part of his radio appearance. The podcast of yesterday’s Triple M Hot Breakfast show features many more rumours including a very curious conversation about the headliner for the 2013 Big Day Out tour.
According to Nui “The Big Day Out has put me in the cone of silence after big revelations last week that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are headlining the Big Day Out 2013. They [the BDO] were very angry; I hadn’t signed the confidentiality agreement but I will and I will respect their wishes”.
That revelation (about the confidentiality agreement not the RHCP tour) prompted co-host Eddie McGuire to attack Nui with a tirade on journalistic ethics: “Hey! Wait a second! That’s your job to break the story… what’s the confidentiality agreement? I know why they want it, but your job is to tell the stories without fear or favour. I’m, being absolutely serious here; it journalists start signing confidentiality agreements no things like this we may as well give it away.”
A chastised Nui then explained that he’s not prepared to put his free VIP tickets and drink card at risk and so he’s happy to sign up, but before he signs he wanted to declare “let’s put this in the bank right now – Red Hot Chili Peppers 2013. They WILL headline the Big Day Out.”
Eddie launched into another lecture that ended with the demand that if Nui signs the agreement he’s “off the air”. Emboldened by his boss’s rant, Nui declared “you can’t silence me Big Day Out!” before moving on to the important business of leaking other tour announcements from tours that haven’t asked him to sign agreements.
After dropping the Soundwave rumours that FL reported on yesterday, Nui got on a roll announcing that Van Halen are in talks with “one minor promoter and one major promoter” to tour Australian in October; that The Offspring look like touring early next year; The Stone Roses are “likely” for Future Music festival; Green Day are “in talks, but no dates or progress yet”; Bruce Springsteen has “offered a window in March… but one major promoter been in talks but has backed out as he said the deal was ‘unworkable’”; and Glen Frey from The Eagles has said he’ll be here in late September for shows and “something special”. Got all that?
