The Shins announce SplendourIn The Grass sideshows

Splendour In The Grass headliners The Shins have announced two super huge sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney this July. While The Shins are self-confessed lovers of our fine nation – a passion they cemented in 2007 when they penned an ode to Oz – it has been over five years since James Mercer brought his heart-breaking tunes Down Under.

Having skewed away from all things indie-pop on his Danger Mouse collaboration Broken Bells, Mercer has finally gifted us a new Shins album Port of Morrow. An astounding return to form (and comeback of sorts) for Mercer Pitchfork has said of the new record: “More so than any other Shins album, Port of Morrow doesn’t sound like it belongs to any particular decade or style, instead hopping around like some fully loaded AM radio dial that cranks out gem after gem.”

Discussing his approach to song writing with FL back in 07 The Shins frontman revealed, “Music is always written first for me. The lyrics are pieced together over time, and generally there’s not a lot there by the time the music is written. During the recording process I get a little bit more into the lyrics because I don’t have to sit there and play guitar but listen to what the song are about and what these sounds are giving me, and then try and derive some subject to write about.”

Mercer will reach our shores with a whole new team on July 23rd, no doubt ready to reclaim his indie crown and show off all The Shins classics that made us swoon through the noughties.

Melbourne favourties Husky have the lucky job of support at both shows, tickets for which go on sale 11am Monday 30th April through ticketmaster and ticketek.

FasterLouder presents The Shins Splendour sideshows:
Monday 23rd July – Festival Hall, Melbourne
Wednesday 25th July – Hordern Pavilion,Sydney

I think everyone is here is underestimating how big The Shins are now. 16 year old girls on tumblr/pinterest love them. So, I'm not going to be surprised when this both sells out and the FL'ers who go say it had the "worst crowd ever"

That said, they were pretty good at Coachella. Fans will lap it up. They play a good mix of old and new material. My major problem is they played my two favourite songs first and second.

And 16-year-old girls have loved the Shins since Garden State. Doesn't mean they're going to sell this out.

great news but festival hall needs to be bulldozed to the ground! if they have to go large, what is wrong with the forum? then next time they tour when "everyone else" likes them and they're getting played on triple m (black keys), they can play big/bad venues like festie hall/myer music bowl/rod laver arena. don't punish us!

Just checked out the setlist then. I'm glad to see they play that Pink Floyd cover. I haven't seen them live before, but I have a recording of that cover from somewhere or other and I think it's kinda cool.

Although a bit disappointed upon looking at a few concert setlists, and realising there's probably no chance I'll see them play Pressed in a Book.

And on second thought, fuck that cover, play Pressed in a Book.

Talk about first world problems. There are some of us who won't be able to go to these gigs happening like The Shins, Jack White and other great artists because they just don't have the money to go to Sydney or Melbourne, or don't have the time, or for some other reasons. Yet here you are complaining because you don't like the venue.

So fuck you.

Yours sincerely,
the butthurt residents of New Zealand and everywhere in Australia that isn't Sydney and Melbourne.

no need for profanities mate. this is a family forum. i'm just a fan of hearing bands in venues that don't detract from the sound quality. i did say it was great news - less of a problem. i'm sorry they won’t be visiting in new zealand. don’t worry too much. you will be able to hear it just as well from nz as people will inside festival hall.

The mixing was absolutely terrible but he seems like a different beast in the live arena. Loads of energy. Didn't expect it at all. I'll probably give Bon Iver, Bon Iver a proper listen later in the week, thanks to it.

That said, I timed my dinner perfectly to avoid the singalong to skinny love. That song needs to diaf.

Yeah to be expected at Coachella. The mixing of their show at the Opera House was perfect and agreed very energetic. People applauded Skinny Love but I couldn't hear them singing along to it when I saw them. You should enjoy it! Its a pretty exceptional album.
