Handy guide to Record StoreDay 2012

This Saturday 21st April is International Record Store and we have put together a handy guide of all the activities happening around Australia to mark its fifth year. There is heaps of gigs, sales and high-brow listening sessions taking place all over the country, so make sure you fork out for a sweet arse piece of vinyl – head here for even more info.

Adelaide

Mr V Music (Semaphore): A record fair will be held at the Masonic Hall across the road on Sunday, 11am-5pm. Entry is free.

Clarity Records (CBD): Second birthday celebrations. Twenty percent of all marked prices for CDs and vinyl on Saturday and Sunday.

Blackwood Sound (Blackwood): Live performances by The Audreys, 1pm; and local singer Laura Hill, midday. In-store specials, plus five double passes to Big Scary’s gig at Adelaide Uni Bar.

Inbound Records (Adelaide): Live DJs in-store. Two-day sale on all new drum-and-bass and dub-step vinyl.

Brisbane

Rocking Horse Records (CBD): Live performances by Blank Realm, Rattlehand and Jungle Giants.

The Record Exchange (CBD): “Fill Your Bag” sale and other in-store specials.

Tym Guitars (Fortitude Valley): Performances by Dumsaint, Margins, Violent Soho, No Anchor and Turnpike. Listening party for new J Mascis album Heavy Blanket, plus a charity auction for a No Anchor prize pack featuring a custom pedal signed by the band.

Jet Black Cat (West End): McKisko and Bigstrongbrute will play live from 5.30pm. Both will have vinyl available in-store.

Canberra

Landspeed (city centre): Second-hand vinyl fair from 10am. More than 2000 used LPs including rock, pop, indie, soul, jazz, blues, hip-hop, metal, punk and ska titles.
Melbourne

Basement Discs (CBD): Live performances by Lisa Miller and Shane O’Mara, Chris Wilson, Jeff Lang, Charles Jenkins, Mikelangelo, Saint Jude, Davey Lane, and more. Music trivia hosted by Brian Nankervis of RocKwiz. Limited-edition releases, light refreshments and discounts.

Melbourne

Northside Records (Fitzroy): Live sets from The Putbacks and The Psyde Projects. Giveaways and limited-edition t-shirts for sale with a “mystery” 45.

Polyester Records (CBD): Twenty-percent off vinyl, CDs, books and DVDs and cupcakes supplied by Sticky Fingers Bakery (Hayley and Amy from Super Wild Horses). Max Crumbs and The Stevens live, with DJ sets by the Gasometer, My Disco, Rainbow Connection and Lost Animal.

Polyester Records (Fitzroy): Twenty-percent off vinyl, CDs, books and DVDs and cupcakes supplied by Sticky Fingers Bakery (Hayley and Amy from Super Wild Horses). DJ sets by RRR Breakfasters, Alan Brough, Daniel Kitson and Claudia O’Doherty, Darren Hanlon and Geoffrey O’Connor.

Pure Pop Records (St Kilda): Live sets by Michael Shaun, Elephant, Simon Imrei, Simon Comber and The Twoks.

Record Paradise (St Kilda): Live music from Even, The Bowers, Rosie Haden and Money For Rope. Lucky 7” dip and guest DJs.

Thornbury Records (Thornbury): Limited-edition exclusive Record Store Day releases, BBQ and DJs.

Wooly Bully (North Melbourne): In-store performance by Peak Twins, 4pm. Capacity is 40, so get there early.

Quality Records (Malvern): Australian music legends Mike Rudd and Bill Putt performing in-store. Ten percent discounts and a 16th birthday sale.

Ritual Music (North Fitzroy): In addition to Record Store Day exclusive exclusives, there’ll be 10 percent off store-wide.

Poison City Records (Fitzroy): Releasing Blueline Medic tribute, Shuffle and Scrape.

Obese Records (Prahran): From noon until 4pm, Goonbag Radio will stream live, featuring Uncle Nevs, Slap618 and more.

Collectors Corner/Missing Link (CBD): Free CD compilation with first 100 purchases.

Greville Records (Prahran): Ten percent off vinyl and box sets; 20 percent off books, DVDs and T-shirts.

The Tote (Collingwood): Wooly Bully and Polyster Records after-party featuring New War, Scattered Order, ZOND and Jusgo Mosh.

Basement Discs: Live performances all day long from some of Melbourne’s finest artists and our personal favourites including Lisa Miller,Chris Wilson, Jeff Lang, Charles Jenkins, Mikelangelo, Alison Ferrier, The Cartridge Family (Suzannah Espie, Sarah Carroll & Rusty Rich),Saint Jude (members of Little John & Downhills Home) The Spoils Duo, Davey Lane & Mikey Madden and more. There will be a Music Quiz and MC duties being handled by Brian Nankervis (of Rockwiz Fame), Derek Guille (ABC Radio Legend), Mikelangelo &Rusty Rich (ex Scared Weird Little Guys), with lots of great prizes up for grabs. There will also be some very special limited Indie Record Store Day releases on CD and/or vinyl.

According to Darren Hanlon (on triple j this morning) no-one in Australia got a copy of Heady Fwends to sell.

Beatdisc will have the Flips/Mastodon split, though.
