Has Gotye jumped the shark?

Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know has taken “a curated reflection of multiple past relationships” and a sample of Baa Baa Black Sheep to the top of the charts across the globe, so it was perhaps inevitable that it would eventually end up on Glee.

In the upcoming episode Big Brother (that’s season 3 episode 15 for those of you keeping track) the characters Blaine and Cooper Anderson will perform the Gotye tune as a comment on their fractured relationship. The teaser clip for the episode features Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) gushing that “We get to sing everyone’s favourite song” and his on screen bro Matt Bomer declaring “I love everything about it so to get the chance to record it was so special.”

Jump forward to the 46 second mark on the clip to hear their version:

Glee’s creator Ryan Murphy famously called Kings of Leon “self-centered assholes”, declared that Slash is “uneducated and quite stupid” and been called a “fucking jerk” by Dave Grohl; so we’re eagerly waiting to hear what Wally has to say about the cover. We’d also love to know what he thinks of the cover of his tune I Feel Better on Young Talent Time.

Being popular and finding wide success isn't jumping the shark, compromising your values to the point of no return is. That's not Wally as far as I can tell.

Clearly that's not Wally, he is a top bloke.
Title should probably read; has 'Somebody That I Used To Know' jumped the shark which is more the point.
The definition of shark jumping is when: "a brand, design, or creative effort moves beyond the essential qualities that initially defined its success, beyond relevance or recovery."
I'd say when Glee performs a tune, it's beyond recovery

I predict that Everett True and his 17 followers who think Boardface is a masterpiece compared to the commercial rubbish that was Like Drawing Blood will be up in arms about this.

Fuck your elitism, let the man make a dime. It's not like he's actually going to be on the damn show. And no one is making you watch it.

Some people are taking a tongue in cheek article way too seriously.

a lack of magenta font might be to blame for that.

And we take are magneta fonts seriously here.

Notice I didn't change the colour? That's how serious.

That's the guitar. The little tinkly glockenspiel riff is Baa Baa Black Sheep.

I don't even like this song, honestly, it's popularity amazes me.

Glee butcher a lot of great songs, so he has finally made it.
The concept of a song jumping the shark makes no sense.

shazie

shazie said on the 30th Mar, 2012

It's probably one of the only songs he's released that I'm indifferent about. Not about it's popularity, but just never really got why it's so globally loved.

In saying that, I love the guy and I'm very happy that a decent Aussie artist is able to get noticed.

oldgregg

oldgregg said on the 30th Mar, 2012

i'm not a gotye fan at all, but I think it's great he's got some attention. im like you in the respect that I don't get the songs widespread appeal, like it's not a bad song, just yeah.. it's nothing spesh. but then again what do I know, I think sweet disposition is rubbish n all, similar trajectory in ways.

A universal sentiment expressed via music that's quirky enough to appease the hipsters but still has the big pop sensibilities to appeal to the masses.

And the use of the baa baa black sheep melody is something hidden in all peoples minds which they enjoy from childhood. So there is a sneaky psychological benefit going on there.
