Limp Bizkit pay tribute toJessica Michalik; call BDOpromoter "that fuckingasshole"

Limp Bizkit have paid tribute to Jessica Michalik, the teenager fatally crushed during their performance at the Sydney Big Day Out 11 years ago, with a massive on stage banner at the first stop on this year’s Soundwave festival tour.

After playing My Way, Fred Durst told his side of the story about what happened at the BDO – “that son of a bitch promoter from Big Day Out, that fucking asshole threatened us and forced us to go on stage because he said there’d be riot if we didn’t. So with police in our dressing room – those fucking assholes with their hands on us pushing us out on to stage. We came out, we played some shit and we lost a human being named Jessica. So as much as we are here to be with you tonight… this is a tribute; a tribute to Jessica. Everything we do in Australia is a tribute to you baby. Let’s hear it for Jess. Her spirit is here today.”

Limp Bizkit set list:
Why Try
Bring It Back
Hot Dog
My Generation
Livin’ It Up
My Way
Take a Look Around
Nookie
Break Stuff

Fred Durst has also invited Jessica’s father George Michalik to attend the band’s first show in Sydney since the tragedy. Mr Michalik has told the Herald Sun that the attending the show will provide closure and says that the invitation is ``very nice and touching, especially in contrast to what the Big Day Out did not do for her. Fred has prepared something very special for Jess in all his shows, but he wouldn’t elaborate. I like this suspense… We both equally need to celebrate Jessica’s purposeful change-of-scenery and get on with our lives without any shade of guilt burden. Jess’s friends need a positive closer, too, and Fred has the power and inclination to do it.’’

Mr Michalik claims that Durst is likely to duet with Jessica’s school friend Gabby Dever during the Limp Bizkit show in Sydney.

According to the Herald Sun article, Mr Michalik also claims that Durst had asked the festival promoters to give 16 backstage passes to Jessica’s friends but the plan was abandoned due to security fears that Jessica’s friends might plan a ``revenge attack’’.

The Coronial Inquest into the Death of Jessica Michalik found that Durst’s actions were “reprehensible” and his on-stage comments were described as “inflammatory and insulting to the security personnel who were engaged in their best efforts to extricate crucially injured patrons from the crowd collapse.”

As much as I hate what happened at BDO over ten years ago I actually it's pretty touching to do this. Go Fred!

I hear Ol' Dursty had a few words to say about Kenny Koala on stage as well.

Limp Bizkit put on easily one of the best sets of the day. It was also great to see them pay their respects.

am i allowed to be cynical about this? because i can't help being cynical about this. i mean, everything fred says is spot on i guess, and george michalik seems satisfied with the whole shebang, but the line between 'paying tribute' and 'whoring out the memory of a dead girl' isn't as fine as one might think.

It was actually pretty touching and well done. The banner got a massive cheer when revealed.
Fred's story about BDO basically was that he saw the crowd situation and, didn't wanna go on. Kenny and Viv came and said there will be a riot if you don't play. He still didn't wanna play, Ken and Viv got the security guards to come into their dressing room and pretty much forced them out onto the stage to play.

Kind of loses its poignancy when durst starts inciting teens to flash for the camera juxtaposed against the jessica backdrop... Just about everything that came out his mouth reinforced my belief that Durst is without a doubt, the giantest of douchebags.

Supposedly one of the chicks that flashed her tits during the Jessica tribute is a Jessica herself. So she thought it was the best moment of her life when the crowd cheered her tits on the big screen at BDO with her name as a backdrop. Or at least that's the summary I got from my mates who were standing right next to her.

DinkiDIDude

played out EXACTLY the same way in Sydney down to an identical line for line rant (Manson outdid him in the crowd member Goody flashing department though), really thinking the truth here is somewhere inbetween, when arrogance clashes with arrogance the fallouts always pretty bad.

There is something unsettling about purportedly paying tribute to a young girl who lost her life in your crowd then demanding the girls in your audience flash their "motherfucking" tits.

The only girls who flashed their goods at Manson had seen too many pies and not enough sun.

Police say they made more than 20 arrests for drug and other offences at yesterday's Soundwave music festival at the Sydney Showground.

Drugs including cannabis, ecstasy, ice and cocaine were seized as more than 200 officers patrolled the event.

Police with detection dogs carried out almost 300 person searches and found 37 people with drugs.

Officers say they also caught a 42-year-old British man selling stolen tickets, and a 48-year-old local man indecently filming festival goers.

His camera was seized and he has been released while police continue their inquiries.

Paramedics treated 442 people, with 13 patients going to hospital.

LMFAO was I really that wasted? thought that one blonde who was sitting on some guys shoulders topless wasnt to bad, but then again I was only watching Mansons show for the whole theatrics and train wreck thing and wasnt close enough to the stage to see anything in up close coherent detail.....maybe the big screen flattered her?.......shit, maybe I was just looking at Manson topless....................:(

i was there in sydney in 2001 and i was there in sydney on sunday. to me, durst seemed very rehearsed and defensive and to tell you the truth he would have gained more respect if he had kept it short and sweet. but in true durst fashion he dragged it out and most of what you could hear was the foul language. to tell you the truth i was a bit pissed at the length of the set, if you're going to ramble on you should have organised with the event co-ordinators to have a longer set. i felt ripped off. i also thought that jessica was probably telling him from heaven to shut the f#*k up and get on with doing what we all came to enjoy, music. yes, i'll admit it, i am a huge lb fan, mostly due to the very talented wes borland, and to have one new song played off their latest record and none played from the unquestionable truth and no sidewaves, i felt the only reason they came back to this country is to tell their side of the story and nothing more. disappointed.

It was a much briefer tribute in Melb than what I saw of the vids of the other two, only about 90secs and no mention of BDO directly, much better imo. Their set was nonstop with songs too after reading some complain about him in Syd. Marilyn Manson was a lot more with it too.. Bad Religion had to stop their set halfway as a pole from the top of the stage was about to fall off into the crowd. It was my first Soundwave/Showground festival, so not sure if normal, but the crowd for SOAD was huge, no room to move from stage to the seating, bigger than capacity really. That's about all that was noteworthy, but overall a better day than I was expecting, and a chance to relive some college memories!
