SLAM Day 2012: The Highlights

The inaugural SLAM Day will take place across the country on Thursday 23rd February. More than 100 venues have already signed up for the event, which coincides with the two-year anniversary of the SLAM rally in Melbourne, where 20,000 protested the draconian liquor licensing laws that lead to the Tote’s in January 2010.

Now because 100 simultaneous gigs around the country is a lot to take in, here are some highlights. (The full list of shows is on the SLAM site )

i always assumed there was an actual rally on tomorrow.

itll be interesting to see how much notice the political parties and mainstream media will take of a bunch of small gigs at hidden away venues after hours, seems like a case of preaching to the converted to me.

Seems like a case of increasing gig participation on a night where venues wouldn't otherwise have pulled in as much revenue to me.

i fully support slam i am just curious as to how slam day addresses excessive red tape and lack of government support for live music venues. community participation has never been a problem as the venues closing hit capacity every weekend.

is the slam day is the foundation for a bigger public campaign?

I think this is part of the problem.

Most businesses need to have more than two profitable nights to be successful.

The Gold Coast only has jazz and soul venues that already have Thursday night gigs pretending to be part of SLAM day. Not one band playing anywhere. *sigh*.

Anyhow its just the first year. A lot of venues heard about this too late to do anything. I expect it to double in size at least next year

It looks like most of the gigs on the list are just regular Thursday gigs but I guess that's kinda the point of the whole thing.

I could be wrong hey. It is possible I could walk into the loft in Chevron tonight to discover there are pamphlets for SLAM day and information to broaden the minds of those there about the struggles of the industry. This then in turn gets people talking and in turn can become an issue that local members of parliament will start hearing about yada yada yada. Well thats how I see it is meant to work right?

The problem is I am worried I will walk in and find nothing there at all but a normal Thursday night. I shouldnt really attack them because they actually support live music by having gigs every Thursday night, I guess I am just more disappointed that no rock venue here has jumped on the bandwagon, though I expect to see them next year.
