Splendour 2012 lineup clues -Summer Sonic edition

Update:
(14/3/12)
The third round of lineup additions has added Ke$ha, Garbage, LostProphets, Hoobastank, Cast, Crystal Castles, Spector, and Other Lives to the bill. The new acts don’t offer much to add our list of Splendour hopefuls, although there’s always a chance of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath heading to the Mix-Up tent and indie groups Spector and Other Lives filling out a mid afternoon timeslot.
(29/2/12)
The second lineup announcement for the festival has added Jamiroquai, Franz Ferdinand, Foster The People, The Vaccines, Kindness and the endlessly horrible rapper Pitbull to the bill.

This morning we woke to the excellent news that Splendour is returning home to Byron Bay in 2012 and with that announcement came the confirmation of the dates for this year’s festivities. With that out of the way our attention now turns to speculation about the lineup.

One of the many sources for Splendour rumours is the lineup for Japan’s Summer Sonic festival – a festival that has shared many acts with Splendour in the past and that has just dropped its first round of announcements. So let the rumours begin!

In 2009 bands including The Flaming Lips and The Specials played at both Summer Sonic and Splendour, while 2010 saw over ten acts including Pixies, Jonsi, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Passion Pit, Surfer Blood, Two Door Cinema Club, The Drums, Richard Ashcroft and Band of Horses jumping on flights from Japan to Woodfordia. Summer Sonic 2012 will be held on the weekend of August 18th – 19th in Tokyo and Osaka, giving any bands playing at both Summer Sonic and Splendour time to sneak in a few Australian sideshows before heading to Japan.

Last year the festivals only shared three acts, but when FasterLouder spoke to Splendour organiser Jess Ducrou last year she revealed that the relationship with the Japanese festivals that traditionally bookend the Splendour weekend – Summer Sonic and Fuji Rock – is likely to be much closer in 2012. “We’ve always had a light dialogue on dates and so on,” she explained, “but interestingly this year we have started talking more with them and I think that will really benefit everyone.”

Sadly, despite the wishful thinking of the rumour mill, the Fuji Rock headliners for 2012 – The Stone Roses and Radiohead – have already been ruled out of Splendour contention.

Summer Sonic lineup (first announcement:
Green Day
Rihanna
Sigur Ros
New Order
Adam Lambert
Death Cab For Cutie
The Cardigans
Passion Pit
Gym Class Heroes
Grouplove
SBTRKT
The Knux
Iceage

So which bands from Summer Sonic could we see on the Splendour in the Grass lineup for 2012? Well how about Splendour 2008 visitors Sigur Ros; Splendour 2010 alumni Passion Pit; and perhaps a return visit from SBTRKT? Yes, SBTRKT is currently touring with Laneway festival, but we all know that Splendour and Laneway have shared a few big acts in recent years – hello to Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons, Yeasayer and Foals.

As for the rest we can almost certainly rule out Rihanna, Adam Lambert and Green Day seem as Splendour contenders; Gym Class Heroes, New Order and Death Cab For Cutie all have upcoming Australian tours already locked in; and Grouplove were on the Splendour 2011 lineup (and returned for Falls).

Poll – Which Summer Sonic acts do you hope to see at Splendour?

The confirmation of the dates for Splendour also means that we can start to rule out bands that have gigs booked on the other side of the world while we’re in Bryon Bay for Slplendour. So far we can (almost certainly) rule out seeing Hot Chip, Little Dragon or Rolf Harris at Splendour as they’ll be busy at Camp Bestival way over in Dorset, England.

We can also rule out the acts booked to participate in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics – so no Underworld or Elbow (who played at Splendour last year anyway).

We shouldn’t have to wait too long until the Splendour lineup starts leaking – the first act for last year’s lineup was revealed in the first week of March.

id love to see the cardigans in australia, have never seen them that would be great. id like to see adam lambert too but not sure he fits splendour, green day and rihanna can come back again soon on their own tours. hopefully they get huge bands that havnt been here before instead of the same ones.

Wouldn't Splendour have some issues with their endless encores and 3 hour+ shows?

dusch13

dusch13 said on the 11th Feb, 2012

GD seem to be huge in Australia regardless of what they have released, i mean, 21st Century Breakdown? No one liked that. But they still sold out 2 shows at Rod Laver. So it wouldnt be that weird for them to play Splendor as a sort of one of Australian show, would it?

Piko

Piko said on the 11th Feb, 2012

Since Robert Smith hates flying, and the recent Sydney Opera House show, I highly doubt The Cure will headline, though why wouldn't Splendour allow them a 3 hour set? There is real reason they wouldnt? It will save money on 2 other bands which would help cover the cost for The Cure.

Mars Volta has been here at least once every year for the past 7 years or so. I think I remember Omar saying in an interview that he feels he has a spiritual connection to Australia because of everything that happened during the 2001 BDO (the sheep incident, the death during Limp Biskit, essentially some of the last ever ATD-I shows), and now feels drawn to the country.

tipping the Black Keys to headline a night

Scooter mcgavin

Scooter mcgavin said on the 12th Feb, 2012

I too would be suprised if Black Keys dont headline, but dont expect the same reception you get in the US it takes more than a number 2 on the hottest 100 and a dude dancing as the film clip to make you as cool as the strokes, bloc party, flaming lips etc. This act could be a headliner mistake for Splendour regardless the small venue should sell out even if the headliner is a fat guy washing himself with a rag on a stick

Saw tons of people at the metro show get out their phones the second they started playing it.

Scooter mcgavin

The Offspring = bogans

Groovin the Moo has added bogan friendly bands to its festival with Parkway Drive, but seriously, Splendour is big enough to not stoop to the bogan ticket buyer level.

Don't get me wrong, I am half bogan, But this allows me to make this statement

Hinee

Hinee said on the 13th Feb, 2012

The Offspring playing the whole of Americana would go down well with me, but purely because they hold massive nostalgia ties for myself personally. In this new interpretation of splendour, the honestly don't fit and I wouldn't even let the idea cross your mind that they are playing.

I'd love to see Zoot Woman play an early sat afternoon set in the MixUp tent and have a Stuart Price dj set with all of his alias's (Jacques Lu Cont, paper faces, thin white duke and les rhythms digitales) set on the Saturday night. But that is way too esoteric for Splendour. Probably more likely to be booked for park life if at all.

So could this splendour be the year for Soulwax and 2 Many DJ's ?

Same could be said for many artists like...

Bluejuice

But they are still fun and good at what they do hence putting on a good show.

I could see them (soulwax/2many) ripping up the Mixup tent.

The question is, would Splendour be able to pay them enough to bail out of a Fuzzy festival Parklife / Field Day where they would get headline $

Oh dear, Nui Te Koha strikes again after seeing that fake poster online last night.

We've got news about The Black Keys. The hot rumour is the US garage rockers will be in Australia in July for Splendour In The Grass.

"There was a line-up leak put online last night, [which] puts The Black Keys up the top as headliners for SITG," music reporter Nui Te Koha told Triple M this morning. "This rumour has been swirling around for a long time.

"They're also saying Franz Ferdinand, Jack White and Bloc Party might be on that bill."

Nui said he's not sure if The Black Keys will do club shows or sideshows, as this could be a one-off exclusive for Splendour In The Grass.

We're playing The Black Keys "Lonely Boy" from their new album El Camino on high rotation at the moment and it's great to see the band finally get their due.

"The good story about the Black Keys is that they've been doing it for a long time," said Nui. "They've actually been to Australia, they're regular visitors. And the thing is they didn't follow fashions to get the crowd - the crowd came around to The Black Keys. They're an incredible band."

Triple M music reporter James Young saw The Black Keys do their raw, driving, bluesy rock a couple of nights ago at Madison Square Garden in New York and he claimed them as, and we quote, "the new Led Zeppelin!". It must have been some night!
