Brisbane Laneway moved indoors

The Laneway festival organizers have decided that after a week of what they term “crazy tropical weather” and with the forecast looking grim for the next week they need to shift all stage areas undercover to avoid the rain at tomorrow’s Laneway show.

Festival co-promoter Danny Rogers says that “the showers will prove a wonderful relief and the cooler weather conditions are pretty much perfect for an event in Brisbane” but thankfully the action will be held out of the rain with “all stages and punter viewing areas of tomorrow’s event will be hosted undercover”.

He says that this will “ensure that both the amazing bands and the punters that we want to have the best experience possible can enjoy these artists without the hindrance of wet weather. The beauty of this site is that it is capable of being hosted undercover and we’ve always had a back up wet weather plan up our sleeve for this show.”

The festival organisers also want to remind you to wear sturdy footwear (no thongs) and that you won’t be able to take an umbrella to the festival.

Rodgers has also responded to feedback about some of the more painful timetable clashes – “The main issue is that we have such a solid line-up of artists that it is inevitable that there would be a few time clashes. For various reasons we will not go into here, this is a common and unfortunate aspect of having a phenomenal multistage line-up. The good thing is that we are a small boutique event and it is possible to walk between each stage in under three minutes so everyone can get a very good taste of every act on the bill if they want to.”

Reaction from organisers.

Brisbane: M83
28 January 2012

We are very sorry for the issues that caused the delay in getting M83 on stage which forced the band to cut their set short by 15 minutes at the Brisbane event last night. It was due to unfortunate and uncommon technical difficulties beyond M83's and our production team's control.

Some aspects of their show were not reflective of the way they usually play and M83 performed in these difficult circumstances to the best of their ability and delivered a great show.

We are very grateful for your patience and understanding and sincerely hope it didn't detract from M83's incredible live performance and a day of amazing music.

The promoters apologise for not communicating what was happening during the delays. We ask you to understand that our focus was trying to get the show up and running as quickly as possible and on a number of occasions we thought that the show was ready, only to discover that the problem was still unresolved. It was an unfortunate situation.

The sound issues that occurred on the other stages at a few points throughout the day were a consequence of the decision to move the entire event indoors two days prior. While they were unfortunate, the issues were relatively minor and on balance we think a better alternative to standing outside all day in the rain. Our goal was to give you and the bands the best possible solution to something (weather) that was obviously out of our control.

We are very grateful for the feedback we received both during and post the event.

Heres my thoughts on the Brisbane Laneway:

Cub scouts - alright, if the singer's voice strengthened that would boost their live performance.

Geoffrey O'connor: they seemed a bit uneasy on a large stage but I enjoyed the 80s style tunes, he looked different than he does in his videos. Would prefer to see his band play at night in a small venue though.

The 2 songs of DZ deathrays - really excited to see their full set in Sydney; they played hard and tight (insert sex joke here?).

Yuck - love these guys, their album was my equal favorite with a couple others last year. They started off a little slow; the lead singer said they had just been traveling for 24 hours and were feeling a bit fragile ( something repeated by a lot of bands that day) but after a couple of songs they were really getting into it. I met the drummer later in the day and he was really nice. His afro was glorious though; it was hard to keep a conversation going without looking at his fro the whole time. With the later timeslot in Sydney they'll be able to relax a bit more before their set

Austra - one of the highlights of the day. The lead singer should have babies with active child to birth a child of holy singing. The outfits they wore were nice and they keep the large crowd engaged the whole time.

Girls - saw most of the set except the last 2 or 3 songs (seeing full set in Sydney). The new songs were great to hear live (also one of my favourites last year. In fact, the laneway lineup is like a list of favorite artists from last year so I'll stop saying it from now on). The lead singer's voice at times was a bit quiet at times but that was probably because of how the songs are meant to be.

Active child - this man's voice is heavenly. Loved his set but somehow the douches and douchetttes flocked to his set. There were so many girls up on guys shoulders and people kept screaming for them to get down, throwing bottles at them. Luckily I had a full bottle of water I filled up so I sprayed it all on one of them and they decided to get down; felt good :) but yes, he played a set which was all content from his album and one song from his EP.

Cults - the problems with soundchecking meant they only got 15 minutes but they were very bubbly and played well. You know what I mean was the highlight for me and I wish they longer set.
Also, Go Outside has been stuck in my head for my trip in Brisbane.

2 songs of feist - Still not a big fan. I like listening to her as background music but I wouldn't go out of my way to see her. Not saying she played bad for the 2 songs I heard though; i was mainly just filling in time waiting for Toro Y Moi. She did, however, play 2 songs that I like so that helped.

Toro y moi - also got a shortened set to 30 minutes but they put on a funky set and I can't wait for the manning bar show.

Chairlift - really nice guys. This was also the very first show the lead singer was playing on the synth for their new album and she did a great job; the new tracks translated well into a live scene. The bassist was very energetic as well and the crowd was getting into the music, despite the smaller crowd due to the drums and the horrors being on at the same time. Their songs have also been stuck in my head on this trip.

M83 - already explained about them but yeah, fantastic live band held back by things that weren't their fault and they still managed to play fantastically.

Overall it was a great day. The crowds for the majority were nice (laneway crowds see usually the most civil), there was nice food and having all the stages indoors was a nice move by laneway, even of the only stage they needed to move indoors was the main stage. Can't wait for Sydney.
