Soundgarden vs Kanye West atthe Big Day Out

Update:
In an attempt to clear the air Chris Cornell has this afternoon tweeted the following message,: “My comments @ BDO were directed solely at inadequate tour production. Kanye had nothing to do with it! We love him.”

So that’s the end of that chapter.

The Big Day Out kicked off with a bang on the Gold Coast this weekend, and it seems a lot of the sparks were flying between headliners Soundgarden and Kanye West.

According to news.com Chris Cornell lashed out at the hip-hop superstar when the soundcheck from West’s stage started to bleed into Soundgarden’s set, inciting boos from fans of the reunited rockers. Cornell told the crowd: “Sounds like there’s children playing music there, retarded children, retarded as in held back. There’s no other word for it.”

Despite his grievances with West, Cornell lead his band through a huge set that included classics Spoonman, Jesus Christ Pose, Black Hole Sun and even Beyond The Wheel from their debut album Ultamega Ok.

Due to the sporadic outbursts of rain that kept the Gold Coast crowd cool yesterday, Kanye West was 45-minutes late to the mainstage.

Soundgarden were pretty good, pity about the constant downpour of rain though.
I've never witnessed the other main stage do such a loud soundcheck during someones set before, it was pretty rude...

kanye was the best festival set i have ever seen. cornell was cut that he wasn't headlining, and even while he was playing, the crowd for kanye was much bigger.

these guys were brilliant, threw in some unexpected songs from the early days which was cool. kanye showing up that late was ridiculous.

saw kanye at splendour last year and really enjoyed his set despite not being his biggest fan. his set at the gold coast bdo was terrible. being 45 minutes late because of the rain was annoying and pissed a lot of people off but wasn't necessarily his fault. he then did nothing but complain about the rain and blame it for his lackluster performance because the front of his stage was wet. i was standing inside the hardly full d barrier and saw countless people leave half way through when he spent a good 20 minutes indulging himself in auto tuned wank and from their he had lost the majority crowd.

Don't know where you were but I only heard the crowd very loudly cheer Cornell's comment. As someone else said, the sound check was stupidly loud, doesn't the stage crew have any way to communicate to the sound desk other than speaking at full volume through the speakers? Wtf? Only booing going on was for Kanye keeping the crowd waiting

ha yeh i saw in the paper todday that his "personal stylist" gets over $3k PER day... that's a million fucking dollars a year to shave some dickhead's head a couple of times a week, and maybe pluck his arse-hairs once a month

Bring on Wednesday night's Soundgarden sideshow and good on Chris for speaking up, fuck West's soundcheck bullshit, the guy shouldnt be on a big day out fullstop, Ken West sold his arse to Kanye West n crew.

I'm not KW #1 fan, but can you really blame him entirely for a bad sound check and being 45 mins late because of water in his equipment? shouldn't we be blaming the sound check on the roadies' fault, and then wet equipment on the rain?

or if all else fails, blame it on the boogie?

definitely, seems they come on 7:45 and soundgraden at 9. doors open at 6 which seems pretty early, not exactly sure how many people overall will be keen for the bronx but i guess a lot of the dancefloor people will be, it's rare for such an awesome band to support such an awesome but somewhat different band

you having a beer somewhere beforehand?

i havent been to the ent cent for ages, dunno where's best for a few warmups

i'm a rather short n skinny fucker with moppy brown hair, will be wearing a light grey "Blues Explosion" Tshirt i'd say (sez "damage" in small writing on the back)

Will be trying to get nice and close for the bronx, by maybe 7:15-30, just not sure how early the diehards get in before the gig to try and secure their place, i hope there aint heaps of arms-folded statues waiting solely for Soundgarden in prime positions cos i tend to bump into people like that a bit, accidently or otherwise :)
