Big Day Out 2012 will be thefestival’s last year in NewZealand

2012 will be the last time the Big Day Out takes place in New Zealand, according to the NZ Herald.

Promoter Ken West tweeted from the event’s official feed this afternoon: “This year will be New Zealand’s last Big Day Out. Come party with us this Friday. It’s been an amazing 18 years here in Auckland.”

West had previously spoken candidly with the Herald about the problems Big Day Out has faced this year, including the challenges of meeting lofty audience expectations, the bidding wars pushing up festival costs, the departure of the festival’s co-founder Viv Lees, and the plans for the future of the festival.

Preparing for the Australian leg of the festival this week – which has dealt with its own fair share of problems – West also vocalised his issues with competing festivals such as Soundwave in Australia.

A Facebook petition to keep the Big Day Out in NZ has already been started by passionate fans – you can join it here

Sucks for the NZ people. But I'm betting BDO wouldn't be making much at all from that show to be honest

Ouch, sucks to be a Kiwi. First Yeezy dropping off and now this? Everything is not coming up NZ.

Sucks to be Cr1zZ, especially since Aerosmith are locked in for BDO 2013.

Will they be playing their blues material? Otherwise they'll play Bluesfest imo.

Have you seen the logo design for 2013? It's David Bowie for sure.

hmmmmm theres an idea, maybe the Kiwis can trade RB some cockels and furry little green fruits to headline their own national festival.....kind of like a retaliatory show of strength against Ken West and Australia.........

Ken West should form a post-punk band to channel all this new found angst. It'd be great.

I like how people on Facebook are still clinging to the idea that Soundwave will ever expand to New Zealand.

the mini-fest failed, i can only imagine trying to take the full soundwave to new zealand would also fail. still, i'll be surprised if aj doesn't try.

this sucks for new zealand, to be on topic.

I really couldn't see Soundwave expanding to NZ, or at least not until after 2013. If I recall correctly, sideshows in NZ are usually under a different promoter anyway.

I think BDO should just fold and stop touring all together. The festival is quickly burning out......

ThatDude123

ThatDude123 said on the 21st Jan, 2012

Even better, all festivals should fold into one endless festival, held across every venue in the world, with priced admission into each venue for each act.

I will call it "Live Nation"
