Cold Chisel to headlineBluesfest 2012

Cold Chisel have been confirmed as the first ever Australian headliner of the Byron Bay Bluesfest. Come April 2012 the newishly reformed Chisel will join Roger Daltry, The Pogues and My Morning Jacket to bring a whole lot of rock to the the Blues and Roots community.

While their tunes couldn’t be further from those of previous headliners such as Bob Dylan and BB King, the decision to have Cold Chisel headline the Thursday night at Bluesfest next year will no doubt be a popular one. The band has just finished up the largest tour of their careers, playing to over 300.000 fans at sold-out arenas around Australia, reaffirming their iconic status and leading our FL reviewer conclude: “Just don’t be too cool to get on board with it!”

And should the Blues and Roots crowd become restless for something a little softer, Jimmy Barnes could always pull out some tunes from his 2009 covers album Rhythm and Blues. Heck, it was good enough for Obama.

I was third row for the chisel show in brisbane; awesome concert in all regards. Jimmy's voice still sounded great and Ian Moss was awesome in all regards. Fitting headliners.

All that said, I don't care for them and I think its a strange headliner. Who wants yobo's at blues and roots? This is similar to the shit that Splendour did with Coldplay and Kanye. Trying too hard in this struggling festival climate to attract a wider range of punters that will only go on to ruin the soul and existing community of these festivals. The long time punters will start heading to Playground, Meredith and Woodford instead so they can find whatever purity is left in the Australian market that hasn't been soiled by adding major headliners that will only attract dickheads.

I take it back. I spoke to a family friend of mine who's been going to Bluesfest every year since forever and he's not happy about Cold Chisel headlining. Thinks it's a bit insulting to all the actual blues musicians. I agree.

Yeah, and go listen to a talk by Meryl Dorey, an unqualified bitch who thinks vaccinations are killing babies despite every piece of scientific evidence saying otherwise. (Off topic, I know, but it's worth saying that I've lost all respect for any festival or event that actually pulls that sort of shit)
