FL shooter wins NMEphotography award
Wed 23rd Nov, 2011 in Local News
A huge congratulations to our much loved FL shooter Mikey Hart – aka TheEnglishGentleman – who was today named NME photographer of the year in the ‘Reportage’ category.
Last month Mikey was nominated in both ‘The Festival’ category for a crowd shot he took at Future Music Festival and in the ‘Reportage’ category for his winning image [above] taken of Washington backstage at The Enmore Theatre in Sydney.
Mikey chose to enter the shot because he saw it as an “intimate, quiet moment, the kind which fans rarely get to see.” Chatting with FL this morning he noted the challenge of capturing these kinds of “off-stage moments,” something which he has pushed himself to focus on in the last 12 months.
Mikey also said that (despite hailing from London) he identifies himself as an Australian shooter, as this is where he took up and developed the art of live music photographer: “It’s nice for a photo taken in Australia, of an Australian artist to be recognised overseas as well.”
Mikey has shot some incredible gigs for FasterLouder over the years including Foo Fighters, Guns n Roses and The Strokes, and has lugged his camera around the festival grounds at Big Day Out, Future Music, Good Vibrations and V Festival to get some truly incredible shots. However that doesn’t mean you won’t still find him in the front row shooting new acts at some of Sydney’s sticky carpet venues like The Annandale, Spectrum and the Factory.
He told us all about his best and worst gigs and gave us a stack of great shooting tips when we recognised him as a FL Shooting Star earlier this year.
