Sydney gets a new venue in2012

The Hi-Fi bar has been hosting live music in Melbourne since 1997 and expanded its empire by opening a venue in Brisbane in 2009.

In 2012 Sydney will join Hi-Fi family with the opening of a venue promising “cutting edge sound, lighting and production systems, plus unmatched sightlines, providing the ultimate live music experience.”

It’s not quite a new venue as Sydney’s Hi-Fi will provide a second life for the recently closed Forum in Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter.

The 1200-capacity venue shut its doors in March with the landlord announcing that he was “negotiating a new lease to a national operator”.

As the forum the venus has hosted gigs from The Presets, Tame Impala, Passion Pit,
Cold War Kids, The Kills, M.I.A, The Streets, Primal Scream, Supergrass, Ghostface Killah,
Parkway Drive, Trail of Dead, Spoon and many more.

Can't say I'm a fan of the Melbourne one either, but they seem to get a lot of good shows unfortunately.

Yeah the Brisbane one has sound issues and for a venue that gets alot of punk/hardcore/metal shows, the floor layout is totally inappropriate. I think i've only really seen heavier bands there, and I don't know what the Melbourne one is like, but in Brisbane it's like this staged style flooring with 3 levels and fuck-all room at the front, so with any sort of movement/moshing people are tripping over steps in the middle of the floor and all sorts of shit.

I'm seeing Explosions in the Sky there in a few weeks so hopefully it's not too bad for a band that isn't on the heavy side of things.

The Melbourne one has a lowered floor in front of the stage (i.e. the area where the "mosh" is, is two steps lower than the rest of the floor). So you end up looking up further at the band if you're in the front. I'm a tall guy, but I still find it a pain in the arse. And I dread to think of what happens to some ankles when there's heavier shows there. I believe they've had ADTR and Alexisonfire there, and they have some metal shows here and there.

Hope they keep the Forum's tradition of having one thousand blind spots and only serving carlton draught at the bars. Because those were clearly that venue's best features.

I've only ever seen DJs here, don't know what it'd be like for live bands but Boys Noize and Days Like This were awesome there

From what I've been told, it's being completely refurbished inside. It'll look and feel much more like a rock venue rather than a bizarre club room
