In brief tours: GZA (andfriends) Lyrics Born, Songsand more

Wu-Tang wordsmith and icon in his own right GZA will be back this summer for a couple of special shows for Sydney and Melbourne heads. GZA is set to perform his landmark album Liquid Swords in full, and we’re sure there’ll be more surprises in the set-list.

Luckily for us, both shows come with a heavyweight supporting cast: Pharoahe Monch, Jean Grae and Rahzel (with seasoned offsider JS-1 on the decks). Yep, sounds like a show. Make sure you’re still standing after the New Year’s celebrations to make the most of this one.

GZA, Pharoahe Monch tour:
Thursday 5 Jan – The Espy, Melbourne
Saturday 7 Jan – The Metro Theatre, Sydney

Having visited us for a quick pit-stop in April, Lyrics Born will return this December to play Pyramid Rock and sideshows in Melbourne and Perth. The Bay Area rapper has a proven track-record for making Australian festivals bounce and will surely do just this with tunes from his new album As U Were.

Sunday 1st January – Flying Squadron Yacht Club, Perth

Freakishly talented drummer Akira Jimbo is set to show off his skills behind the skins at three exclusive clinics this November. Famed for his electronic/acoustic hybrid drumming techniques Akira will perform a selection of exciting, dynamic and musical tracks at the clinics where fans and aspiring drummers will also be given a chance to pick the legend’s brain after each session. it's at transit bar. i've already got tickets to the sydney show but i might head to this too.

i'll be interesting to see how many punters they get there since a lot of people who were interested would have bought tickets to the sydney show. there'll also be a lot away for new years. hopefully there's a good turnout so we get shows like this in the future.

Transit is pretty small, I'll be surprised if this doesn't sell out so I just grabbed my ticket then. It's great to see Canberra getting a few good shows this summer.

it's strange, all the hip hop shows in canberra cost more for some reason. xzibit just came through and he was about $40 extra from memory.

Jesus, what a fucking show. Jean Grae absolutely killed it as well as being pretty damn funny with her banter, it was just a shame the crowd was pretty reserved/hungover. Pharoahe was also fantastic and Simon Says made the place go absolutely nuts but the sound seemed to be a little off the whole time, had a bit of difficulty understanding for the most part. GZA certainly didn't disappoint and seemed genuinely happy to be there at the beginning but he seemed to lose the crowd a bit when he wasn't performing Liquid Swords or Wu-Tang stuff.

Overall a really, really great night and completely made me forget how exhausted I was from the night before. I wish Transit got more big shows like that, it's such a nice, intimate venue.

The tour, minus Jean, is now playing Wollongong on Sunday. So weird.

Good to hear the tour has been well-recieved; can't wait for Jean's show on Wednesday.

Was alright, apparently gza was meant to play for another 30 minutes but with how feral the crowd was I'm not surprised they called it quits early

wu tang fans are to hip hop shows what shirtless pill munchers are to dance festivals

jean was great, and yeah her crowd interaction is on point, alot of the crowd wasnt feelin it though mainly because they are dickheads. though her set did get a bit boring towards the end.

pharoahe was great as usual but didn't do any organized konfusion stuff which disappointed me greatly, simon says is always amazing live though

gza was good, but hip hop shows at the metro always have the sound holding them back, u could hardly understand any of the lyrics unless you already knew them. and he was rapping stuff like inspectah decks verse from triumph so he could of at least done wu tang clan aint nothin to fuck with. ''gold'' was dope.

^ Something happened with a dude from the crowd jumping on stage during Pharoahe's set, and Jean came out and said something? I didn't really see what happened.

I had a bit of a giggle watching the hand movements of the fat wigger in front of me.

Sorry Jose and MAB I didn't realise you guys were there, I would have said hi.

I was in the photo pit when the dude jumped on stage, was pretty funny. Basically he jumped on stgae and kept telling Pharoahe that he was shit and he should just get the fuck off the stage.

Tbh Pharoahe handled the situation really well. He seemed to calm the other dudes with him so the tosser didnt get the shit beaten out of him on stage. wouldnt be surprised if that happened off stage though haha
